  1. How To Take Care Of Your Eyes

Like other ailments which affect us, many ailments of our eyes can also be prevented. There are ways to maintain the natural health of our eyes and prevent them from ailments.
Different diseases and conditions affect our eyes differently. The most subtle ones may affect and go without our knowledge. The more severe ones affect our vision, sometimes they cause a lot of pain and distress but sometimes they don't.
So if we are to take good care of our eyes we have to be vigilant and get appropriate help without delay when ever there is the need.
Cleanliness is one important factor to keep disease causing organisms (germs) away from us. Touching your eyes with dirty fingers and objects can transfer diseases to your eyes. This is commonly seen in toddlers and small children. By keeping clean, such infections are prevented.
Diet is another important aspect of a healthy life. Like our bodies, our eyes are also in need of nutrients to maintain eye health. Some nutrients are good for our eyes. Eating a healthy diet with a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits ensure our eyes get all the required nutrients.
Vitamin A deficiency can cause serious eye ailments and can even lead to blindness in severe forms. This is a common problem amongst the malnourished populations of the developing countries. Fortunately, with adequate nutrition this problem can be solved and blindness can be prevented. So eating healthy is important to keep your eyes and sight healthy.
Wearing prescription glasses will reduce the strain if you have a refractive error. If you want to wear contact lenses, make sure you follow the instructions of the lens manufacturer and use them as recommended. Also, make sure you maintain the necessary hygiene for otherwise you may be faced with sigh threatening infections.
If you have undergone corrective eye surgery such as LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis), make sure you take proper care of your eyes as advised by your doctor.
Wearing sun glasses will not only protect your eyes from ultra violet rays but also from environmental pollutants which are harmful to your eyes.
Cataract or clouding of the lens is a very common problem encountered in old age. If you have developed a cataract, you should get your eyes checked and operated to remove the cataract before it is too late. Keeping a cataract for too long can cause serious consequences. It may not always be painful but a long standing cataract can cause irreversible blindness. In fact, this is one of the commonest causes of preventable blindness in the old age.
Glaucoma is another condition common amongst the elderly. This is a condition in which one looses eye sight very gradually due to damage caused to the optic nerve (the nerve responsible for vision). If your eyes are not regularly checked for this condition, this may be completely over looked until too late. So if you are more than 60 years of age or if you have risk factors for this disease, it is imperative to get your eyes checked regularly to rule out glaucoma.
If you have anything unusual about your eyes, you should promptly get your eyes checked by an eye care practitioner.

In the digital era, many of us can’t live without using any technological products such as television, computer and so on. Therefore, sometime we will ignore the effect of the technical products that we are using. This effect will cause our eye harm seriously. Eye is very important to us without eye we can't see anything. So I hope this article can help everyone to take care of your eye.

  2. There are actually a good bacterias!

Do you know that in every each of us, there are actually bacterias living in our bodies?

A bacteria would be the last thing we all want to have in us, right? Because we have this mind-set that bacteria is a super-tiny microorganism eating our body from the inside, until its get rotten. Well, at least that is what I used to think.

    Then, I read this article. There are actually a good bacterias! This type of bacteria are called PROBIOTICS. Their appreances help our body in many ways, such as;

-help with digestive system problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation or diarrhea.

-help restore the flora that is destroyed in colon by the use of medical treatments.

-help the body make vitamin K, which cannot be made solely by the body.

    -helps with blood clotting.

    Some examples of probiotics are;
    bulgaricus, thermophilus and Bifidobacterium.

Nowadays the probiotics can be taken from food like yogurts and yeast. There are also now in pill or powder form.

So,what do you think? Never saw this one coming right?

  3. STAGES OF SLEEP:

Someone has said, "Blessed is the person who is too busy to worry in the daytime and too sleepy to worry at night." That is so very true! Indeed, sleep is bliss. A night's sleep is a break from the stress of daily life. Sleep may sometimes even act as a solution to some of the problems by helping your brain think in peace and solve serious problems. Naps are definite stress busters. It is during your sleep that you dream, you dream of wonderful things that may not come into reality; but your dreams show them to you. It is during sleep, that you get an opportunity to be with yourself, far away from the real world. You get to meet your subconscious as your sleep takes you away from your conscious self.

Sleep is a natural phenomenon of the state of rest and regular sleep is essential for survival. Interestingly, its true purpose is still being researched. Researchers have not yet obtained conclusive results about the exact purposes of sleep. Moreover, it is interesting to observe, that our sleep undergoes a series of stages. Yes, we sleep in stages. Sometimes we do realize the different forms of sleep in the various stages of sleep, while at other times, the distinction is unclear.

According to the basic classification of the various stages of sleep, sleep is grouped into two distinct stages, namely, REM and NREM. REM sleep is characterized by a rapid movement of the eyes, as also a very low muscle tone that is typically seen in mammals. Most of the dreams that you remember after awakening from sleep, are those occurring in the REM stage of sleep.

The NREM, which is known as the non-REM sleep, is composed of four different stages. A comparatively lesser amount of dreaming occurs during this stage of sleep. Movements of limbs or even sleepwalking are observed during the non-REM stage of sleep. The four stages of the NREM sleep are simply named as N1, N2, N3 and N4. Let us look at each stage of the non-REM sleep in detail.

Stage N1: This stage of sleep can be called as the phase of drowsy sleep, during which you may experience hallucinations and sudden twitches. It is during this stage that you may lose your muscle tone and your conscious awareness. This stage of sleep is characterized by the brain transitions from alpha waves to theta waves and is primarily the stage when sleep starts laying her hands on you!

Stage N2: During this stage of sleep, muscular activity further reduces and the awareness of the external environment vanishes. Sleep spindles, the bursts of brain activity during which the brain tries to stop processing, characterize the N2 stage. Briefly, this stage of sleep is when the brain succumbs to the sleep that had begun to lay her hands on you.

Stage N3: Walking in sleep or sudden feelings of terror when asleep, commonly occur during this stage of sleep. Bed-wetting may also take place during this stage. The stage N3 is mostly only the transition to the fourth stage. It is one of the phases of a very deep sleep. This is the stage wherein the sleep begins to engulf your brain.

Stage N4: It is a stage of an even deeper form of sleep as compared to the third stage. According to some researchers, the third and the forth stages of sleep can be combined and together called as delta sleep. This is when you are fast asleep, far away in the world of sleep.

For me, sleep opens doors to the world of dreams, to the world of meeting yourself, the world that is away from the bitter truths of life. A sound sleep is cloud nine!

  4. Today I wish to talk about internet dating. For our information, nowadays we have many alternatives to chat with other people through internet. Besides that, we also have different kind of software that can help us. This make internet chatting and dating become common. Is Internet dating myth or reality? What does dating in virtual net give us and with what to start?
There are many ways of attracting attention to yourself and meeting person, to make an appointment, to make a declaration of love, but what to do if when looking into someone’s eyes your voice trembles, and you become redder than the ripest strawberry. The answer is simple, dating chat will save you, this is the easiest way to say without ceremony what you think about. People gather for communication, flirt, love. Dating chat is a good way to find friends, pen friends, relax and get a positive charge of energy, of good spirits. Loneliness is not sentence anymore.
We can choose a suitable nick-name that characterizes us more vividly, and make a step towards the communication with people. It’s for us to decide whether to be honest, frank or to start with lie and fictitious sex. But to become acquainted with the help of lies is not the best way to confidence and the heart of the person who probably will be able to take place near you in the real life.
People from different countries, cities, of different social status and age visit dating chat. The person you will become acquainted with can possess good qualities, but nobody is insured that the chatter on the other end doesn’t possess negative emotions, slander.
Certainly, internet dating also will bring impact or unhappy memory for us if we do not know how to manage it. Therefore, we need to know how to protect our self, if not we will be the victim of internet dating.

  6. Coconut oil has great healing power and health benefits. By taking a few table spoons of coconut oil everyday, you can get all the health advantages of coconut oil. For several years, coconut oil in its natural form has been used in the Indian sub continent to maintain healthy and nourishing looks.

For hair care, many products including shampoos and hair oils can be found containing coconut. Skin care creams and soaps contain coconut oil to give a soft glowing skin.

weight loss products are particularly more popular. Modern claims state that fats in coconut oil are converted directly into energy and they are not stored as fats. This ensures that you get enormous energy from coconut oil and you won’t accumulate more fat. When you are energetic, your metabolism works much faster providing you more opportunities to burn fat faster. The legitimacy of coconut oil products greatly depend on the manufacturers. Even though coconut oil products can be used for weight loss, you should not trust everything found on the internet.

There is no need to preserve and protect coconut oil products because coconut oil has greater shelf life naturally. When you buy good quality products, you can keep the oil under room temperature for several months. Some virgin coconut oil products can be kept for even one year.

When the smell and taste of coconut oil products are similar real fresh coconut, then you can certainly believe that the product is virgin. Ordinary coconut oil products will have a bland taste and smell as the refining process removes natural smell and flavor.

buying virgin coconut oil is always better because you get all healthy nutrients only in virgin oils. make sure that it is virgin and organic.

  8. Natural black hair care

For natural black hair care, it is important to be gentle with the hair. Comb our hair while it is wet. Use a comb with large teeth and be careful not to roughly pull through snags in the hair. Look for natural products that will add shine and moisture to the hair. Also visit a health food store and locate Shea butter, a natural butter which is extracted from seeds. Buy raw shea butter because refined shea butter has been processed. Shea butter is a breat pomade for the hair. Some people whip the shea butter with a hand blender and add essential oils. Whipped shea butter has a lighter consistency than the raw butter.

There are two ways to take care of natural black hair.

    • Natural Black Hair Care with Coconut Oil
    • Aloe Vera Gel for Styling Natural Black Hair

Coconut oil is an oil that is sometimes used for cooking. The oil has a solid consistency when it is cooler, but easily melts in warmer temperatures. Coconut oil will add a nice sheet to the hair and keep it moisturized. It also smells nice. Coconut oil also can be used to moisturize the body. The oil melts into the face, so there is no need to worry about harmful ingredients that may cause break outs.
Aloe vera gel, sold in most drug stores and health food stores can be used as a gel for the hair. Use this gel for two-strand twists or sleek styles. It can also be used to groom dreadlocks. Experiment with the gel to make sure that it does not flake in the hair.

  10. Here is an interesting topis to be talked about. How to find your soulmate...

Your soul mate is the person who has these traits:

Complementary traits: For example if you lose your temper easily your soul mate should be a calm and relaxed person. After all you are going to act as a team and if you both lack a certain trait then when you face a problem that requires this trait to be present you might both fail to face it.

Common interests: One of the worst things that could cause breakups and relationship dissatisfaction is the lack of true intimacy. If you both have some common interests then this will help you spend more time together and intimacy will always be there.

Similar belief system: Love addiction might let you ignore this point but later on you might find yourself unable to live with someone having different beliefs.

Tolerable bad traits: No one is perfect and finding a perfect partner is a dream however finding someone who makes bearable mistakes and who has tolerable bad traits is very important because if the mistakes were unbearable then sooner or later you will end up dissatisfied.

Same intellectual level: You don’t want to be talking about things in your life and constantly hearing the word “Huh”. Being with someone who has the same intellectual level will increase intimacy and help you come closer together.

You must love him: Sounds pretty logical right? No, lots of relationships start because people feel lonely, because they want to get married to anyone fast and because they just want to be in a relationship. This is not real love and the cost of doing so is living unhappy.

  11. Shark

This article is about one of the sea-creature that I respect and fear most.In this article it is said that contrary to the common myth that sharks are instinct-driven "eating machines", recent studies have indicated that many species possess powerful problem-solving skills, social complexity and curiosity. The brain-mass-to-body-mass ratios of sharks are similar to those of mammals and other higher vertebrate species.

In 1987, near Smitswinkle Bay, South Africa, a group of up to seven great white sharks worked together to relocate the partially beached body of a dead whale to deeper waters to feed.

Sharks have even been known to engage in playful activities (a trait also observed in cetaceans and primates). Porbeagle sharks have been seen repeatedly rolling in kelp and have even been observed chasing an individual trailing a piece behind them.

So,next time,do not EVER underestimate these creatures cause they are at the top of the sea food chain.

    1) Limited physical movement to the point of becoming stiff, thus causing the liar to take up minimal space.

  14. What is skin whitening?

Skin whitening is a procedure in which the darker skin is made to look lighter. Though there are several techniques in whitening the skin, it is essentially done through the process of exfoliation i.e. getting rid of dead skin at the outermost layer of the skin and unveiling a new layer.

The agents or chemicals that are used in skin whitening normally works in two ways. In one way these so called skin whiteners absorb the UV rays that are responsible for darkening your skin. Alternative some other skin whiteners work to reduce the melanin pigments that darken your skin in high concentration.

There are so many skin whiteners available at present in the market. All those skin whitening products contain one or more ingredients such as kojic acid, ascorbic acid, hydroquinone, etc, which inhibit tyrosinase that helps in producing melanin

Drinking water is essential for a healthy body. Water regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, keeps skin youthful and muscles strong.

Water is present in every cell and tissue and involved in so
    many biological functions: digestion, absorption,
circulation and excretion. It helps us with keeping our hormones balanced and our brain chemistry Relies on water for proper balance. Water gives us energy and strengthens the immune system.

Most people are not drinking enough water and are semi dehydrated. Our body cannot work at optimum level without the water it needs.

What happens when you don't drink enough water?

You will not feel as well as you possibly could, your body does not have what it needs for good health and so your health declines.

I think that drinking water is very important. We need to drink enough water every day. Our body will feel very uncomfortable, sick feeling and also the toxins and poisons dumped into the digestive system begin to recalculate.

In a great forest, a charcoal-burner live a poor life with his wife. They grew poorer and poorer in which they always went hungry to bed.

One evening, the King was hunting in the forest and found the poor family. Then, the King had promise them to bring them to His paradise castle. The charcoal-burner and his wife was very happy to join the King and promise that will obey on one rule that would made by the King.

In the castle, the charcoal-burner and his wife was treated so well such as in the paradise. They had nice bed, nice clothes, nice foods and living so comfortable in there. As what they had promise, the King made a rule that they must obey on. He ordered his steward to put a soup-tureen in the middle of the dining table and told the charcoal-burner pair not to take off the cover, else there will be the end of their fortune. They promised Him and then the King went away.

One day, the wife was so curious of what is inside the soup-tureen. The charcoal-burner felt that he wanted to make his wife happy if he took the risk to break the rule. So he took the hande and raised the cover slowly, while the woman peeping into the soup-tureen. Suddenly, a mouse had sprung from the tureen. It ran round and round the room, while they were chasing after it. They knocked down chairs and vases.

The King came and told them that they shouldn't do it and that break the promise they had made before. And so, the King send them back to their hut.

This "promise" story is very interesting and more make sense because it's unlike most of this kind of story that using magical concept. And yeah, its very interesting and a bit funny too.

  22. I want to share with all of you some tips that i've been read in an article just now.It is about the 5 Best Technique to control and calm your mind.

The first level – Reflect on the positive counterpart
It stands to reason that the thoughts you most want to remove would be negative: fears, anxieties, anger, lust, revenge, pride.

The second level – Reflect directly on the misery

The next level goes a touch deeper. Look past the thoughts themselves, and see what they are costing you.

The third level – Letting them slide

This level is about simply letting your thoughts slide by without attaching to them. Thoughts are just thoughts. You are not your thoughts. You don’t have to believe them; you don’t have to fight them; you don’t have to cling to them. They are just thoughts, and they only have power if you give them power.

The fourth level – The source of the thoughts

The first thing we have to realise is that thoughts always have a source – our emotions. The most simple way – and yet no one ever says it. Simply feel it. Bring it to the surface, find the emotion, and feel it.

The fifth level – Beating down the bad thoughts

This level is the hardest, and draws upon the techniques of modern psychology. It is hard and painful, and should be reserved for the most extreme cases. Think of this level as a big strong man beating down a weaker man, with pure brute force.

    1. Maven

Mavens are the people who know practically everything about their fields. They are the masters of knowledge. A maven is the go-to person when people have questions regarding the field. To be a maven, you should have deep curiosity and deep desire to learn. You should also have the discipline to keep learning even when you don’t feel like to.

    2. Connector

Connectors are the people who know a lot of people. They are the masters of networking. They are the people who seem to know everybody. As a connector, your connection is the value you can provide to others. When someone has a need, he may get the solution through your network.

    3. Salesman

Salesmen are the people who can persuade others. They are the masters of persuasion. They can convince others to buy from them or to do something they want. Of course, a good salesman will deliver real value without being manipulative.

    4. Synthesizer

Synthesizers are the people who can connect different fields and come up with fresh ideas. They are the masters of ideas. Synthesizers live in the Intersection (a term from The Medici Effect) where ideas from different fields collide and form new ideas.

    5. Explainer

Explainers are the people who can explain complex concepts in simple ways so that they can be understood easily. They are the masters of transferring knowledge. They may not know everything, but they can make whatever they know easily understood by others.

    6. System builder

System builders are the people who can create systems around what they are involved in. A system builder can organize something so that it works independently without his intervention. The system can keep providing value while the system builder works on creating new systems.

  24. Some simple ways to never lose your ideas.

1)Bring a piece of paper and a pen wherever you go.

2)Write a draft message in your cell phone
Okay, sometimes you may forget to bring a piece of paper with you when you go out. But you won’t forget to bring your cell phone with you, will you? So in such case, you can write your ideas as a new text message in your cell phone and save it as draft.

    3)Tell someone about it
Why should you bear all the burden yourself? Share it with someone else. You can tell your friend about your idea and ask her to help remind you about it. You don’t even need to be physically in the same location as her. You can call or send her a text message.

  25. Do you think that you have a good relationships with someone? Here some characteristics of a good relationship.

    1. Both sides see the relationship as an opportunity to give

One of the basic relationship problems is selfishness. How does selfishness occur? In my opinion, selfishness occurs when someone focuses more on getting rather than giving. The more someone focuses on getting, the more selfish he or she becomes. That’s why the willingness to give is essential for good relationships. Both parties should see the relationship as an opportunity to give. This is the foundation upon which the other points below are built.

    2. Both sides are willing to change

Nobody is perfect but everyone can grow. In a good relationship, both sides are willing to change. They realize that they are not perfect and there is still a lot of room for improvement. Instead of blaming their partner when something goes wrong, they look inside to see if there is something they can change. When both sides have this attitude, the relationship grows stronger and stronger.

    3. Both sides are willing to admit mistakes

In a good relationship, both parties aren’t afraid to admit mistakes. Instead of being defensive, they openly admit the mistakes they make. They can then work together to correct the mistakes. This, of course, is not easy to do. It takes a humble heart to admit mistakes.

    4. Both sides are willing to listen first

In a good relationship, both sides are good listeners. They are willing to understand their partner’s position first before trying to get understood. Doing this is much easier when both sides see the relationship as an opportunity to give (characteristic #1).

    5. Both sides support each other

Not only are both sides willing to listen, but also they give what their partner needs. The law of reciprocity states that when we do good to others they will also do good to us. We reap what we sow. By supporting each other, both sides in the relationship get what they need.

    6. Both sides are open to each other

Misunderstanding is one of the basic relationship problems. That’s why it’s essential that both sides are open to each other. When they have something they don’t like about their partner, they should communicate it rather than just keeping it in their heart. Of course, they should do so in a respectful way so as not to offend their partner. Part four of How to Win Friends and Influence People (which I review last week) gives us tips on how to do that.

    7. Both sides have integrity

In a good relationship, both parties act in line with what they think and say. They keep their promises. This is important because they can then trust each other. This trust makes the relationship strong.

  27. Five tips for kicking a bad snacking habit.

For the past several months, I’ve managed NOT to eat any of my beloved Tasti D-Lite. And it hasn’t even been that hard to give it up. How did I go from 2-3 daily stops at my favorite frozen-yogurt store down to zero? Here are the strategies I used to kick my bad habit:
    1. Running start. I gave up Tasti D-Lite after we returned from a short vacation, so I’d already gone four days without it by the time I was faced with temptation. This gave me a gratifying head start.

    2. Busy time. I’ve heard that it’s easier to kick a habit when your schedule changes, because you don’t have a fixed pattern yet. I gave up Tasti D-Lite right when school was starting up again, when my schedule would be unusually hectic.

    3. Not one bite. No exceptions. I gave it up entirely. Many people advocate moderation for treats, and this strategy works for some folks, but not for me. If I ate Tasti D-Lite three times a week, I would spend a huge amount of time and mental energy fretting about “Now? Later? Today, tomorrow? Does this cone ‘count’?” I find that a lot of people are pretty judgmental about this: they insist that I should be able to enjoy things in moderation -- and they predict that giving things up altogether will mean I will be less likely to stick to my resolution. True, the cold-turkey strategy isn’t for everyone, and it may sound draconian, but in fact I have much better success, and much less difficulty, when I give up things altogether. Know what works for YOU.

    4. Head off temptation. One reason that I ate a lot of Tasti D-Lite was that I was genuinely hungry, and it was a convenient snack. I’m trying to make sure that I don’t let myself get hungry, so I don’t get tempted to take the quick solution.

    5. Consider marshmallows. I heard that if you’re wondering whether you over-indulge in something (shopping, alcohol, Tasti D-Lite), you should substitute “marshmallows,” and ask yourself what you would think of that habit. In my case, I said, “Twice a day, sometimes three times a day, I stop to eat marshmallows.” “I feel a little embarrassed by the number of marshmallows I eat.” “I wouldn’t let my children eat this many marshmallows in one day.” Ick! Too much!

Despite having made this big effort to kick my habit, I wholeheartedly agree with Samuel Johnson, who said that, “All severity that does not tend to increase good, or prevent evil, is idle.” I’m not being idly severe with myself; I’m not giving up TDL (as I affectionately call it) because I think it’s “wrong” to eat it. I don’t think it’s wrong to eat it. I was just eating too much of it, and it was crowding out more nutritious food.

Gosh, it feels good to kick a habit. I feel freer, less guilty, more virtuous.

In my opinion, eating too much snack is not good for our health. Especialy junk food. We must avoid from eating too much junk food.

  28. I read an article on thestar.com.my on a super talented professional drummer named Arthur Kam. What differs him from any other world-class drummer is that he’s still a secondary school students (he’s 17) with a very outstanding achievements in his field and all of this he had achieved way before he can legally drive. The biggest accomplishment that he made so far is when he was named as the Winner of Modern Drummer magazine’s worldwide Undiscovered Drummer Contest in the 18-and-under division. He also both a Malaysian as well as national record holder for youngest person to complete a professional drum course (aged 10 years 11 months). Once called as the ‘God of Drums’ by Jacky Cheung, Arthur had performed with few of well-known local artistes such as Siti Nurhaliza, Jaclyn Victor, M.Nasir as well as International Artistes include World-renowned drummer Akira Jimbo, American Idol house drummer Teddy Campbell, Sadao Watanabe and Jacky Cheung. His passion and talent in music in undoubtedly remarkable and all of his hard works was all worth it and has made him what he is today. 29. Pillars of Success

Failures are but the pillars of success. To learn from our failures is to achieve success. Never to have failed is never to have won. Unless we experience failure and its bitterness, we will never appreciate the sweetness of victory; it becomes merely a turn of events that is little or no interest. Failures not only help us to succeed, tney make us energetic, enthusiastic and rich in experience.
“We live and work and dream,
    Each has his little scheme,
    Sometimes we laugh,
    Sometimes we cry,
And thus the days go by.”

  30. What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis, often called allergies or hay fever, occurs when your immune system overreacts to particles in the air that you breathe—you are allergic to them. Your immune system attacks the particles in your body, causing symptoms such as sneezing and a runny nose. The particles are called allergens, which simply means they can cause an allergic reaction.

People with allergies usually have symptoms for many years. You may have symptoms often during the year, or just at certain times. You also may get other problems such as sinusitis and ear infections as a result of your allergies.

Over time, allergens may begin to affect you less, and your symptoms may not be as severe as they had been.

  31. Treating Pain When It Becomes a Disease in Its Own Right

Navigating the path to chronic pain control is tricky. For the patient and the doctor, the challenge is that there is no single drug or therapy. A combination of approaches, often coordinated by a team of pain experts, is best.

Chronic pain can begin with an injury or a problem such as a bulging disk in the spine. It can be associated with complex syndromes such as fibromyalgia. Or you may experience it as headaches, back pain, joint pain, nerve pain, or a myriad of other localized symptoms.

But here's the rub: Whatever its origin, chronic pain can become a disease in its own right, requiring special attention and treatment. Theories about why and how this happens are explained in this Health Journey. The good news is that science understands more about chronic pain than ever and recognizes that alternative therapies such as yoga, meditation, and acupuncture play a healing role.

You're not alone! One study estimated that 30% of Americans have experienced some kind of chronic pain. Among them are people whose stories we explore here—inspiring, instructive, wise.

  32. What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of asthma can be mild or severe. You may have mild attacks now and then, or you may have severe symptoms every day, or you may have something in between. How often you have symptoms can also change. When you have asthma, you may:

Wheeze, making a loud or soft whistling noise that occurs when you breathe in and out.
    Cough a lot.
    Feel tightness in your chest.
    Feel short of breath.
Have trouble sleeping because of coughing or having a hard time breathing.
    Quickly get tired during exercise.
Your symptoms may be worse at night.

Severe asthma attacks can be life-threatening and need emergency treatment.

  33. How is asthma diagnosed?

Along with doing a physical exam and asking about your health, your doctor may order lung function tests. These tests include:

Spirometry. Doctors use this test to diagnose and keep track of asthma. It measures how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs and how much air you move.
Peak expiratory flow (PEF). This shows how fast you can breathe out when you try your hardest.
An exercise or inhalation challenge. This test measures how quickly you can breathe after exercise or after taking a medicine.
A chest X-ray, to see if another disease is causing your symptoms.
Allergy tests, if your doctor thinks your symptoms may be caused by allergies.
You will need routine checkups with your doctor to keep track of your asthma and decide on treatment.
