READING ENTRY 6 (K24)

89 comments:

  1. I read about Lymphangioleiomyomatosis, or LAM, that a rare lung disease where an unusual type of muscle cell grows uncontrollably in the tissue of the lungs. While it is not considered cancerous, these growths can prevent the lungs from providing oxygen to the rest of the body. LAM almost exclusively affects women, often during their childbearing years. It is estimated that 250,000 women worldwide have LAM. There is no known cure for this disease. As it is still no cure,it is a danger disease and i hope that somebody will find the cure as this disease could attack anyone or any women that we love.

  2. What is the hardest thing to break?
What is the hardest thing to break? Diamonds are hard to find but not hard to break.
What is the hardest thing to break then?
    The answer is: HABIT
If you break the H, you still have A BIT. If you break the A, you still have BIT. If you break the B, you still have IT!!!
Hey, after you break the T in IT, there is still the 'I'. The person
at the end of the day, is the root of all the problems. Cute???
Now, I know why HABIT is so hard to break. Its destiny is in its name.
    The word itself.
My lecturer taught me never, never, never to ASSUME . Because it makes an 'ASS' out of 'U' and 'ME'....
Then what you all think about? What is the hardest thing to break in all of your heart?

this disease make her mind lost the control of her part of body...
she no longer could control her legs then she will lose control of her tongue where other people could not understand what she is trying to say...

  4. Recently, I received an article in an email from my close friend from the secondary school in my hometown. I noticed that it is a quite interesting article, so I would to like to tell u all about the article.

    Health - Important TIPS

    1) Answer the phone by LEFT ear.

    2) Do not drink coffee TWICE a day

    3) Do not take pills with COOL water.

    4) Do not have HUGE meals after 5pm.

    5) Reduce the amount of OILY food you consume.

    6) Drink more WATER in the morning, less at night.

    7) Keep your distance from hand phone CHARGERS.

    8) Do not use headphones/earphone for LONG period of time.

    9) Best sleeping time is from 10pm at night to 6am in the morning.

    10) Do not lie down immediately after taking medicine before sleeping.

    11) When battery is down to the LAST grid/bar, do not answer the phone as the radiation is 1000 times.

Healthy is the most important thing in our life. It is can't compare to the money. This is because we can get the money back by working when we use all the money. On other hand, healthy cannot be returned once it becomes worse although you have much money and impressing status in the society.

Now we have entered the university for almost a year. I have seen that many people fall sick easily when studying in university. This is because we do not know how to take care of our healthy well. Since parents are not beside us anymore, we have to learn some methods to handle our healthy ourselves. In general, there are many tips and methods can be found through internet. Therefore, I just want to introduce a small part of them.

First of all, do you all know there are many surrounding things can affect our healthy? Some of you should be never notice that. Besides, having good habits in our living style will also improve and maintain our healthy from time to time. For an example, my roommates like to eat chickens every day. Sometimes, he refuses to take vegetables. This habit is very bad and will spoil our healthy. This is because vegetables have various types of vitamins which are good for healthy, but meats have a bad thing that is cholesterol. If he takes it every day, his healthy will have big problems, and finally spoils by having some serious diseases such as heart disease, stroke and weak immunity.

In conclusion, I hope people can read through the tips and try to apply them in our living. We should take care of our healthy well even though we busy to handle many matters in this university.

  5. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A FRIEND

Based on the article that I read....
For Ashley, it was like this: She was sitting with a big group in the school lunchroom when she accidentally knocked her drink onto her lap. As word spread that it looked like Ashley had wet herself, the laughter began to mount. Then she noticed her best friend doing something strange.

"She poured water on herself," Ashley said.

True friendship is hard to find, Ashley says. But she knows it when she sees it. And so do many of you. We asked our readers what it takes to be a good friend. The responses poured in — more than 5,000 of you sent us emails.

For some, the defining moments of friendship were profound, such as the soulmate who helps you through the grief of losing a family member or camps out in your hospital room when you're sick. For others, it's smaller gestures that loom large — the friend who talks for hours when you're feeling alone, even if it means going over on his cell phone minutes; the one who helps you with your homework, even when she hasn't done her own; or the friend who helps you search for your retainer, even when it means going through the garbage from the school lunch.

  7. Tips on Being a Successful Student

•Focus. This is the single most important strategy for success in both high school and college (and at work). Focus on what you want, on what you are doing, on where you are at the moment. If you are in college, focus on each and every class and assignment. If you are in Chem I, focus on that class, that assignment, that grade. Don't let your attention be diluted with outside interests until your schoolwork is completed. You won't do well in International Politics if you are fighting with your significant other or worrying about what to wear to the football game this weekend!

•Prioritize. Education is your #1 priority at this time in your life. All decisions must be made around that priority. Sure, it would be fun to spend your time off at the beach, but not if you have to finish a term paper. And it would be fabulous to hang out with your sorority sisters until 4:00 in the morning, but not if you have a final exam on cell mitosis at 9:00 the next day.

•Sleep. Get enough sleep and eat a balanced diet. This isn't advice from Granny; it is a practical, stay-healthy-and-you-will-do better-in-school fact. Junk food, binge drinking, doing drugs, and staying up all night do not create a successful scholar. Take care of you. Your success depends on it.

•Participate. Go to all classes all the time. Skipping class is the best way to fail. Attend every class and be a part of each one. Ask questions, visit your professors during office hours and discuss class material with other students. It's your education...so be a part of it, and strive to be good at it!

  8. History Mystery
Have a history teacher explain this----- if they can.
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head

    Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln .

    Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln , was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.
John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln , was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.
Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln ' made by 'Ford.'

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

    And here's the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe , Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.
Creepy huh? Send this to as many people as you can, cause:
Hey, this is one history lesson most people probably will not mind reading!

The above provide some details of two presidents of the United States, Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. As you go through the list, you may find them to be disturbingly strange and eerie, why in the world are there such coincidences? History, as how I see it, is a never-ending cycle, happenings of similar circumstances, situations and effects keep repeating, only things is, they apply to different people at different places and take place at a different time. As for the reasons or origins of this phenomenon, it may be the effects of déjà vu, or maybe that is how God wants it to be, or perhaps this is how the nature works, who knows? ^^

  9. Simple Tips for the Morning

    1 | 2
If you're like many people, the start of the day isn't your favourite time. So here are some tips you can sneak into your routine without much effort. Try at least one of these tomorrow . . .

Stretch every extremity for 15 seconds. Try this before you open your eyes. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each finger, then your hand, then your wrist, then your arm. Repeat with the other arm. Then your toes, feet, ankles and legs. End with a neck and back stretch that propels you out of bed. You've just limbered up your muscles and joints, and enhanced the flow of blood through your body, providing an extra shot of oxygen to all your tissues.

Brush your tongue for one minute. There's no better way to rid yourself of morning breath and begin the day minty fresh. Hundreds of bacteria take up residence in your mouth every night, so just brushing your teeth alone isn't going to vanquish them all.

Drink a glass of water. Remember, you've been fasting all night long, so you wake each morning dehydrated.

Check your morning calendar. Have a large calendar or whiteboard in a prominent position in the kitchen. On it, write everything you need to know for that day. Check it each morning as you sip your coffee - it will help you avoid the stress of forgetting something important.

Kiss all the people you love in your house (including the dog and cat) before you leave. Connecting with the ones you love soothes stress and gives a positive start to your day.

  10. 9 Reasons People Cheat

    1. Bored
I'd say this is the most common reason that people cheat. It's tough to keep that edge throughout a relationship. Things start off grand and then level off and then you both realize that it's still real life. When you meet someone else, that inaugural excitement of a new relationship kicks back in.

    2. Dependence
At first glance, cheating seems like independent behavior. It could be interpreted as doing what you want, when you want. But I would argue that cheating is a dependent behavior. A cheater is dependent because they are not strong enough to break up with their significant other in order to get with the new person.

    3. Confusion
Sometimes life or a particular situation can get to you. When the perfect storm of confusion is going on in your head, you make mistakes.

    4. Because They Let You
If any girl ever cheated on me, I'd break up with her immediately. Forgiving a cheater is putting up with it, and starts a vicious cycle. That person who cheated may lose respect for you and might continue to cheat-because they know they can get away with it, because you'll continue to take them back.

    5. Nurturing
If someone is mistreating you, then your first instinct is to get away from him or her. But sometimes it's not that simple-maybe you are raising kids together. If you feel trapped in a bad relationship, it's only natural that you will run to the open arms of a person who treats you well.

    6. Revenge
This is quite simple- an eye for an eye. Cheat on them if they cheat on you. If they continuously hurt you or abuse you in some way, you do it to get them back.

    7. Confirmation of Attractiveness
Sometimes when you're in a long relationship, or if your significant other is taking you for granted, you begin to wonder if you're still attractive. Perhaps, because you were out on the dating circuit, you felt more attractive when you were single. If you have an affair, you've proven that a new person can be attracted to you.

    8. The Thrill
Some people just enjoy the thrill of cheating: running around secretly, risking getting caught, andcreating thrilling moments with a forbidden romance.

    9. They Don't Consider It Cheating, Even Though You Might
Relationships have that grey area, usually right before you become exclusive. He thinks date #4 is when you're "together," and you think date #2 is when you're "together." If you haven't talked about exclusivity, someone may think they are well within their rights to see other people, even though the other person in the relationship may not.

  11. health news:
People who were obese at the age of 18 are twice as likely to die prematurely compared to those who were normal-weight teenagers, Swedish researchers said on Wednesday.

They also found that men who had been overweight at 18 were one-third more likely to die prematurely compared to their normal-weight peers.

The study of 45,920 men over an average 38 years underlines the dangers of being overweight and the need to tackle a growing obesity epidemic.

About 400 million people around the world are classified by the World Health Organization as obese, including 20 million children under the age of 5.

"Obesity and overweight were as hazardous as heavy and light smoking," Martin Neovius of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and his colleagues wrote in the British Medical Journal.

"The obesity pandemic seems to affect children and adolescents more than adults."

Neovius and his team analyzed the cause of death of more than 45,000 men who had mandatory military conscription tests in Sweden at the age of 18.

All had their body mass index (BMI) measured and were asked whether they smoked. For the 3,000 who died during the 38-year follow up, the incidence of death was highest among the obese.

Heavy smokers, considered those who puff on 10 or more cigarettes daily, were twice as likely to have died prematurely compared to non-smokers, the researchers said.

Since 1969, the number of overweight men in Sweden has tripled and those who are obese has risen five-fold, the researchers noted. This highlights an urgent need for public health programmes to deal with the problem, they said. The global obesity epidemic and smoking among adolescents remain important targets for intensified public health initiatives," Neovius and colleagues wrote.

  12. Tornado

A tornado is a violent, rotating column of air which is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud. Tornadoes come in many sizes but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris.

Most tornadoes have wind speeds between 40 mph (64 km/h) and 110 mph (177 km/h), are approximately 250 feet (75 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. Some attain wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than a mile (1.6 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km).

Although tornadoes have been observed on every continent except Antarctica, most occur in the United States. They also commonly occur in southern Canada, south-central and eastern Asia, east-central South America, Southern Africa, northwestern and southeast Europe, western and southeastern Australia, and New Zealand.

  14. HOW TO SAVE A WET CELL PHONE:
Get it out of the water as soon as possible. The plastic covers on cell phones are fairly tight, but water can enter the phone in a short period of time, perhaps only 20 seconds or less. So grab your phone quickly! If you can't get to it in time, your best bet is to remove the battery while it is still under water. Water helps dissipate heat from shorts that can damage the phone, so most damage occurs when the inside of the phone is merely wet and there is a power source.
Remove the battery. This is one of the most important steps. Don't take time to think about it; electricity and water do not mix. Cutting power to your phone is a crucial first step in saving it. Many circuits inside the phone will survive immersion in water provided they are not attached to a power source when wet.
If you have a GSM carrier, remove your SIM card. Some or all of your valuable contacts (along with other data) could be stored on your SIM. To some people this could be more worth saving than the phone itself. SIM cards survive water damage well, but some of the following steps are unnecessary i.e. don't heat it. Just pat it dry and leave it aside until you need to connect your phone to your cellular network. (This step does not apply to CDMA carriers such as Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, Sprint, etc.)
Dry your phone. Obviously you need to remove as much of the water as soon as possible, so you can save it from getting into the phone. Shake it out without dropping it, then use a towel or paper towel (ideally trying not to clog the wet paper in the gaps and grooves of the phone) to gently remove as much of the remaining water as possible. Dry the excess moisture by hand.
Remove any covers and external connectors to open up as many gaps, slots, and crevices in the phone as possible.
Use a vacuum cleaner if possible. Do not use a hair dryer (even on a "cold" mode) to dry out the phone, as this may force moisture further into the small components, deep inside the phone. If moisture is driven deeper inside, corrosion and oxidation may result when minerals from liquids are deposited on the circuitry. Using a hairdryer might be a temporary fix, but this will eventually cause component failure inside the phone. Instead, remove all residual moisture by drawing it away with a vacuum cleaner held over the affected areas for up to 20 minutes in each accessible area. This is the fastest method and can completely dry out your phone and get it working in thirty minutes. Be careful not to hold the vacuum too close to the phone, as a vacuum can create static electricity, which is even worse.
Use a substance with a high affinity for water to help draw out moisture. Leave the phone in a bowl or bag of uncooked rice overnight. The rice would absorb any remaining moisture. If available, it is preferable to use desiccant instead. Desiccant will absorb moisture better than rice. It may be found under a brand name such as "DRY-ALL" "Damp Rid" or "Dry Right".
Let the phone sit on absorbent towels, napkin, or other paper. Remember that the goal is to evacuate all the moisture and humidity, not to trap it or add even more. Check the absorbent material every hour for 4 to 6 hours. If moisture is evident, repeat the vacuuming step and desiccant steps.
Test your phone. After you have waited a day or so, make sure everything is clean and dry looking and re-attach the battery to the phone and see if it works. If your phone does not work, try plugging it into its charger without the battery, if this works, you need a new battery. If not, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it. Don't try to hide the fact that it has been wet. There are internal indicators that prove moisture

  15. HOW TO TAKECARE OF YOUR SKIN AND BODY:
First, stay hydrated. Then, water is an amazing beauty product, not to mention it's free! 8 glasses a day will give your skin a noticeable glow, and you'll feel much better in the process.
Exfoliate. For a home remedy, mix sugar and olive/almond/coconut oil.(whichever is available) Rub in circular motions over the body. Rinse thoroughly. Do not apply this to the face, as the skin on our face is much more delicate.
Bathe. For healthy, antioxidant-nourished skin, add at least 3 tea bags while the water is running for a bath. While you bask in this bath, take 2 of those tea bags and rest them on your eyes to avoid tiredness and puffiness.
Begin a skin regime. Make sure it consists of cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing the face. The extra money will go to good use.
Shave the right way. Do it while in the shower, about 3 minutes after entering the shower. (this will soften hairs). Try shaving with water instead of soap, since soap may dry the skin out when used for shaving.
Don't neglect the skin under your hair! To maintain a healthy scalp, apply vaseline to it every few days. For a dry, flaky scalp or dandruff, apply apple cider vinegar and rinse out. (no dandruff shampoo needed)
Finally, slather on a rich body lotion after every shower/bath. Lotion with shea butter is amazingly moisturizing, not to mention it smells great.

  16. DO YOU KNOW THAT MUSHROOM AND TEA CUT CAANCER RISK?
CHINESE women who eat mushrooms and drink green tea significantly cut their risk of breast cancer and its severity in those who develop it.

Researchers from University of Western Australia looked at the diets of 2,018 women from the southeastern Chinese city of Hangzhou — half of whom had breast cancer — between July 2004 and September 2005.

The researchers noted that the rate of breast cancer cases in China was four to five times lower than that typically found in developed countries.

Eating as little as 10 grams, or less than one button mushroom daily, has a beneficial effect. Women who consumed the most fresh mushrooms are two-thirds less likely to develop breast cancer compared with those who did not eat them. Fresh and dried mushrooms were equally effective.

The fact that the combination of green tea and mushrooms was more effective than just mushrooms alone could partially explain the lower incidence of breast cancer amongst Chinese women. The study was published in the International Journal of Cancer.

  18. FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS:
Trust your instincts. It can be difficult to depend on something that you don't understand, and you probably shouldn't base every one of your decisions on intuition. For example, if you're hiring someone, you should look at qualifications first and foremost, or else you might accidentally discriminate. But when you've weighed all the options and there is no obvious, rational choice, intuition's really all you've got.Intuition is basically how you quickly tap into your subconscious mind, which is where you "archive" all kinds of information that you don't remember on a conscious level. Sometimes you pick up on things subconsciously without realizing it, such as body language. It'll register as a certain "feeling" that you can't articulate at that moment, but it could very well be valid.
Ask yourself questions and listen to the first answer that pops into your mind. That isn't easy, because several thoughts will flood your mind at once. For instance, let's say you're looking at a menu. In figuring out what you want, pick out the first thing that stands out to you. Ignore the remainder of your thoughts, like "But I didn't even look at the specials...but my friend is on a diet and I'll feel bad eating this in front of her...but my uncle said the mashed potatoes he had here were too mushy...blah, blah, blah." Don't dwell on it. Just pick something. It's scary...what if you make the wrong choice?...but you'll be fine.

Dubai Waterfront is a stunning new development comprised of canals and islands containing luxury hotels and homes. Its 70 kilometer (42 miles) Arabian Canal runs through the desert, while its arc shaped man-made islands produce a shelter around the Palm Jebel Ali. The harbour provides sea access for trade and entertainment, while its surroundings are divided into a series of commercial, residential, resort and amenity areas.

Dubai Waterfront will extend Dubai coastal line by 820 kilometers (492 miles), which is 12 times the current length of Dubai's coastline, and will cover an area of over 81 million squared meters (266 million squared feet). It is intended to be the world's largest beachfront development and the largest man-made development. It will be larger than Manhattan or Beirut and is being built to be Dubai's premium luxury district. The development will feature over 100 different waterfront developments and over 150 planned communities.

  20. Baskin-Robbins

We thought we'd see some improvements after we identified Baskin's Heath Shake as the Worst Drink on the Planet. All they did was lower it from 2,300 to 1,900 calories, leaving an almost equally neglected drinkable disaster to set back unsuspecting sippers. It’s typical of the menu there as it's soft serve is among the most caloric in the country, the smoothies contain more sugar than fruit.Check out our complete list of the 20 Unhealthiest Drinks in America to see the other liquid offenders. If you learn how to make smart choices when you sip, you can lose a few pounds a month without giving up your favorite foods, or ever dieting again.

SURVIVAL STRATEGY: With frozen yogurt, sherbet, and no-sugar-added ice cream, Baskin's lighter menu is the one bright spot. Just be sure to ask for your ice cream in a sugar or cake cone—the waffle cone will swaddle your treat in an extra 160 calories.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Lights went out at tourism landmarks and homes across the globe on Saturday for Earth Hour 2009, a global event designed to highlight the threat from climate change.

From the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and London's Houses of Parliament, lights were dimmed as part of a campaign to encourage people to cut energy use and curb greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.

Organizers said the action showed millions of people wanted governments to work out a strong new U.N. deal to fight global warming by the end of 2009, even though the global economic crisis has raised worries about the costs.

"We have been dreaming of a new climate deal for a long time," Kim Carstensen, head of a global climate initiative at the conservation group WWF, said in a candle-lit bar in the German city of Bonn, which hosts U.N. climate talks between March 29 and April 8.

"Now we're no longer so alone with our dream. We're sharing it with all these people switching off their lights," he said as delegates and activists sipped bluish cocktails.

The U.N. Climate Panel says greenhouse gas emissions are warming the planet and will lead to more floods, droughts, heatwaves, rising sea levels and animal and plant extinctions.

World emissions have risen by about 70 percent since the 1970s. China has recently overtaken the United States as the top emitter, ahead of the European Union, Russia and India.

    BILLION PEOPLE TAKE PART

The U.N. Climate Panel says rich nations will have to cut their emissions to a level between 25 and 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 to avoid the worst effects of warming. Developing nations will also have to slow the rise of their emissions by 2020, it says.

Australia first held Earth Hour in 2007 and it went global in 2008, attracting 50 million people, organizers say. WWF, which started the event, is hoping one billion people from nearly 90 countries will take part.

"The primary reason we do it is because we want people to think, even if it is for an hour, what they can do to lower their carbon footprint, and ideally take that beyond the hour," Earth Hour executive director Andy Ridley told reporters at Sydney's Bondi Beach.

In Asia, lights at landmarks in China, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines were dimmed as people celebrated with candle-lit picnics and concerts.

Buildings in Singapore's business district went dark along with major landmarks such as the Singapore Flyer, a giant observation wheel.

Other global landmarks that switched off their lights included the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the Reserve Bank in Mumbai, the dome of St Peter's Basilica in Rome, Egypt's Great Pyramids and the Acropolis in Athens.

    -COMMENT-
i also join this event.we turm off the light at the 8.30pm untill 9.30 pm..We just opened the study lamp. It is interesting and i love to save the world..

  23. Flu for all seasons
    By LAWRENCE FOO

Many believe that flu only occurs in cold climates, and that it does not or seldom afflicts populations in tropical countries. That’s not true.

LEE woke up with searing pain in various parts of his body. He felt feverish and was also sneezing incessantly. Thinking that he must have caught a cold, he promptly went to his family doctor.

During the examination, his doctor also found Lee’s throat to be inflamed. All these symptoms pointed towards influenza, and not the common cold as originally thought by Lee.

Differentiating influenza from the common cold

Influenza, or flu as it is more commonly known, is a contagious disease caused by the influenza virus. Generally, many people are confused between the flu and the common cold. Although both are caused by viral infections, flu almost always has more severe and debilitating symptoms, such as chills and fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.

In addition, flu can lead to complications, particularly in young children and the elderly. These groups of people are more susceptible because of their generally weaker immune systems.

The flu is also known to exacerbate the symptoms of people living with chronic diseases such as diabetes and arteriosclerosis.

It is estimated that 90% of all flu-related deaths occur in the elderly population. It is also interesting to note that the hospitalisation rates among flu-infected children of less than one year of age are comparable to that of the elderly.

The flu virus is highly contagious, transmitted easily through cough, sneeze, faeces, blood or even contact with contaminated surfaces. The flu virus can remain infectious for up to 10 days or more in the human body. The transmission period is especially longer in children.

    Not just a winter issue

Another prevailing confusion about flu is that it only affects countries with winter seasons. Therefore, it is not uncommon for people to only request flu vaccinations when they are about to travel overseas to countries experiencing very cold weather.

The incidence of flu in temperate countries shoots up in the middle of autumn, and peaks during winter in January or February, then subsides during spring (as shown in the graph). When summer arrives, flu-related sickness is rarely recorded in clinic visits there.

This fact has led to the perennial belief that flu only occurs in cold climates, and that it does not or seldom afflicts populations in tropical countries. However, that belief is not entirely true and such a misconception can be costly.

In the US, a burden of illness study found that flu kills approximately 36,000 people every year, and costs the country billions in healthcare expenses. Since this information was made known, every effort has been made by the US government to encourage its population to get vaccinated. This study has further strengthened the belief that flu only exists in countries which experience cyclical climate change.

However, this belief has since changed when scientists in Singapore and Thailand conducted a separate burden of illness study to find out the cost of flu on their respective countries. The results were startling as the numbers showed that the flu-related deaths in these countries were similar to those recorded in the US.

Why you should get vaccinated every year

In tropical countries, flu occurs persistently all year round, but could mildly peak during certain times of the year where rainfall is heavier than usual.

The flu viruses are constantly changing. Generally, new flu virus strains circulate every flu season, hence each year, before the flu season, the most active flu viruses are identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO), who then decides what formulations to use each year.

For many years, Malaysia has been a part of the WHO flu surveillance programme. Every month, samples of flu viruses are collected from more than 100 sentinel sites all over Malaysia – from private and government settings – which provide valuable data on the prevailing flu virus in the country. These samples are in turn submitted to the WHO headquarters in Geneva for decision on the right strain that flu vaccines companies must create for that particular year.

Back in 2006, one strain of flu virus which was circulating widely around the world was found to originate from Malaysia. It was subsequently named after Malaysia, and later picked by WHO as one of the flu strains for the year’s vaccine formula.

No matter what, one thing is clear. Flu occurs as often in tropical countries as in “winter” countries, which means precaution needs to be taken in Malaysia.

    My comment:
Recently, I have noticed that many people around are affected by flu virus. I wonder why this matter will happen because this virus spread in the cold season. After reading this article, I have learned some knowledge about this virus. Actually, the place which has most of this flu virus is the tropical country. Flu is different from catching in cold. It has more severe symptoms and maybe cause a person die. Therefore, when a person is affected by flu virus, that is a serious problem. You guys should go to clinic to take a checkup. There are a lot of cases which relate to flu virus have contributed to the number of died people in some countries. I found some precautions through internet and I would like to tell you all about them. Firstly, maintain proper hygiene and etiquette will reduce the transmission of flu to you or your loved ones. The second precaution is closing your mouth while sneezing, or using sanitary wipes before handling items that could potentially transmit the virus, could decrease the rate of an outbreak in a family setting. Besides, u try not to make contact with utilities that are often touched by people like lift buttons, escalator handle belts, and so on.

Annual vaccination is still the best preventive measure to lessen virus transmission and infection significantly. The flu vaccine has been around for more than 60 years, and is generally safe for all populations. It is estimated that up to 30% of vaccine recipients will develop side effects, but they are usually mild and topical, and subside within less than five days. One should refer to a doctor if these side effects last for more than five days. However, those who are allergic to eggs should refrain from taking the flu vaccine. As awareness grows, hopefully, Malaysians may one day practise the same annual vaccination habits in the near future. I hope all people will take care of their health well before handling the hard and busy university life.

  24. ANGER MANAGEMENT

    >>>Relaxation
Simple relaxation tools, such as deep breathing and relaxing imagery, can help calm down angry feelings. There are books and courses that can teach you relaxation techniques, and once you learn the techniques, you can call upon them in any situation. If you are involved in a relationship where both partners are hot-tempered, it might be a good idea for both of you to learn these techniques.
Some simple steps you can try:
•Breathe deeply, from your diaphragm; breathing from your chest won't relax you. Picture your breath coming up from your "gut."
•Slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as "relax," "take it easy." Repeat it to yourself while breathing deeply.
•Use imagery; visualize a relaxing experience, from either your memory or your imagination.
•No strenuous, slow yoga-like exercises can relax your muscles and make you feel much calmer.
Practice these techniques daily. Learn to use them automatically when you're in a tense situation.

    >>>Cognitive Restructuring
Simply put, this means changing the way you think. Angry people tend to curse, swear, or speak in highly colorful terms that reflect their inner thoughts. When you're angry, your thinking can get very exaggerated and overly dramatic. Try replacing these thoughts with more rational ones. For instance, instead of telling yourself, "oh, it's awful, it's terrible, everything's ruined," tell yourself, "it's frustrating, and it's understandable that I'm upset about it, but it's not the end of the world and getting angry is not going to fix it anyhow."
Be careful of words like "never" or "always" when talking about yourself or someone else. "This !&*%@ machine never works," or "you're always forgetting things" are not just inaccurate, they also serve to make you feel that your anger is justified and that there's no way to solve the problem. They also alienate and humiliate people who might otherwise be willing to work with you on a solution.
Remind yourself that getting angry is not going to fix anything, that it won't make you feel better (and may actually make you feel worse).

    >>>Problem Solving
Sometimes, our anger and frustration are caused by very real and inescapable problems in our lives. Not all anger is misplaced, and often it's a healthy, natural response to these difficulties. There is also a cultural belief that every problem has a solution, and it adds to our frustration to find out that this isn't always the case. The best attitude to bring to such a situation, then, is not to focus on finding the solution, but rather on how you handle and face the problem.

  25. DETERMINING SUITABLE BIRTHDAY GIFT IDEAS

Most of us frequently – if not all the time – are short of good birthday gift ideas. Regardless of who the intended recipient is, whether it is a brother, sister, mum, dad, grandparent or in-law, often we all end up frantically searching through shopping malls for the elusive perfect birthday gift. All too often unfortunately, all these stores seem to stock only products that fall into one of three categories – they are either unsuitable, overpriced or impractical.

So when you are looking for birthday gift ideas it can help to bear in mind the following points. Firstly, does the recipient deserve the efforts you are going to find them a gift? If they are a passing acquaintance or you find them disagreeable, then perhaps a gift is not necessary. If the person does deserve a gift, you should determine to what extent you want to go to for them. Are they worthy of you trudging through a crowded shopping mall for? Quite often, the quest for good birthday gift ideas can take longer than initially envisioned, so it is important that you only extent this for gifts for the people most important to you.

Often, before setting out on a shopping expedition to the mall, or online, it is good to have a think about your intended recipient. What are their interests? Have they been dropping any subtle hints about something they may particularly want or need? In some cases, you are geographically distant from the recipient, so it may be hard to determine quite what they may be looking for in a gift. However generally you will have at least a rudimentary knowledge of the person interests and what they like. You should also determine prior what your budget is for the gift, and stick to this. While you are likely to see otherwise suitable gifts outside of your budget, you should stick to your original budget lest exceeding it should cause consternation.

When it comes to choosing from different gifts you should always consider whether the item in question is most suited to your recipient. Some of the questions to ask of the prospective gift include, Is it in some way useful? Could it bring the recipient enjoyment? And perhaps most importantly, is it something I would like to receive myself? If the gift meets these criteria and fits within the budget, then chances are it is entirely suitable.

  26. Reading Material, as usual, something that we can learn from... uhm. Another motivational story from me.

    Building Our Bridges...

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with Brooklyn, however bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision and after much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built. Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge. The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.In spite of the mockery and his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence. This is to remind all of us you even the loftiest and most challenged dreams can be achieved with persistence and determination. So we should just go out and "build our bridge".

*lesson? perseverence and determination are needed to turn dream into reality.

    Community colleges

    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/2/6/nation/3206581&sec=nation

Setting up more community colleges is a great step by the government. With this colleges around , less fortunate people who cannot afford to further their studies have the opportunity to do so. This is important if we are to end the poverty circle from continuing to younger generations. Besides that , this colleges will give a change to the academically challenged to learn some skills so that they can continue to earn a living.

This is really a good move by the government as it can help the citizen as well as the country to grow. Thru this plan , hopefully the poverty rate in our country will drop as well. I look forward to seeing more of this community colleges coming up all over Malaysia.

    English or Bahasa Malaysia?

    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/2/27/nation/3357130&sec=nation

A issue that was settled a few years back is now being brought up again. I have no idea as to how the plan was considered feasible a few years back but now problems are arising. Is this a mistake on the part of the government or are teachers not working hard enough to meet the requirements needed by the new system? I think that our government probably did not conduct sufficient research to determine the feasibility of such a big change. They were probably just hoping that people would cope as they go.

However , what is done is done. It is not a matter of pointing fingers but rather to solve the argument immediately. This constant debate could affect the performance of students as they might worry about how the changes will affect them. Let us hope that this debate will come up for the last time and that the government will resolve the issue quickly as it can very well affect the quality of our future generation.

    Just a gimmick?

    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/3/25/focus/3535498&sec=focus

When I first read this letter , I was still sceptical on whether Earth hour was just a gimmick. Today , I went to Pyramid which was suppose to be part of the event to check it out for myself. I must say that I was disappointed with what I saw. The place was still as bright as before with just a few shops turning one or two lights. As disappointed as I am , would I say that it is just a PR stunt? Maybe not , I believe that WWF initiated something like this with the purest of intentions.

The people who should be blamed should probably be the people of the world. We should be ashamed that there is actually an hour dedicated to asking us to off our lights when we should actually have the civility to do so by ourselves. So would I say the Earth hour is a gimmick? I think not because I think it still reaches out to some people. For those who remain ignorant of the crisis , please start changing your mindset and do your part to help the world.

  30. ~Aromatherapy~

Historically, aromatherapy has referred to the treatment of various ailments using essential oils extracted from aromatic plants, flowers, seeds, leaves, bark and fruit. Today, aromatherapy is practiced to enhance standard medical treatments, or in massage to treat physical and sometimes emotional conditions.
Essential oils are a key aspect to aromatherapy and can be used in three ways, through inhalation, topically and orally. Aromatherapy works on both physical and nonphysical levels. It works holistically by addressing the physical body, mind and soul. Aromatherapy works when essential oils enter the body by absorption through the pores of the skin or inhalation through the nose. Because the nerves of the nose are connected directly to the limbic system of the brain, an area of the brain associated with emotions and memory, aromatherapy can have a profound effect on the user.

Aromatherapy works by linking physical, mental, and emotional levels of concern and actually works best when it is used by the mind and body simultaneously. Aromatherapy works subtly, through the senses as you absorbed impressions. It targets different neuro-chemicals in the brain, to lift up, stimulate, sedate or create euphoria. Aromatherapy works harmoniously with all anxiety reduction techniques like meditation, relaxation techniques or yoga.

When asking how aromatherapy works, it is important to first understand some facts about our brain, our memories and emotions, and in particular, our sense of smell. The sense of smell is the least understood of the human senses, but we do know that aromas have the most immediate effect on the body and mind. Smells can trigger vivid memories, involving sights, sounds and emotional impressions of events even in our distant past. Have you ever smelled something you love baking in the oven and been brought back to an earlier, happier time? If you allow it, aromatherapy has the ability to heal as well.

    Comment:

I believe all of you already know about aromatherapy. But do you know how aromatherapy works? Actually, aromatherapy works in two ways, on physical or nonphysical. Aromatherapy works when essential oil enter our body by absorption. There are many types of essential oils in market. Users can choose their own essential oil. Besides, aromatherapy benefits include sleep improvement, muscle relaxation, mood boosting, blood circulation and etc. It also is being used to treat Alzheimer’s disease patients.

  32. An Unhealthy Burden

Some days it seems as if life throws you stress left, right, up, and down. It can drain your energy, destroy your good mood, and challenge your outlook. Those are the obvious mental repercussions.

But science has shown that stress is not merely a metaphysical thing. We have discovered that stress causes your body to release hormones that raise blood pressure, speed up your heart and breathing, halt digestion, cause a surge in blood sugar, and more. When stress is ongoing such as the stress caused by money problems, bad relationships, or an overburdensome job this constant physical reaction can significantly raise your risk of colds, diabetes, heart disease, back troubles, and almost every other major health concern. Indeed, stress is emerging as one of the principal contributors to poor health in modern countries.

There's more. On a daily basis, stress often leads to unhealthy habits. A really bad day pushes you to the nearest doughnut or ice-cream store. It saps your willingness to exercise or eat well or have fun. It causes you to tune out the world, to sit in front of the television and ignore your relationships.

  33. Breathe Away Anxiety

Proper breathing is particularly important during moments of great anxiety. At times like these, many people resort to chest breathing the type of big, desperate inhales and exhales that make you rapidly puff up and deflate your chest, says Michael Crabtree, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, and a licensed clinical psychologist.

To regain healthy breathing during periods of anxiety, he says, lie on the floor and place your hand on your chest. Using your hand as a gauge, try to reduce the amount of chest movement, while continuing to breathe normally. You don't want your chest to move; you want the other parts of your body to take over the breathing using your diaphragm instead of the big chest inhales and exhales. Do this for five minutes.

Be aware that chest breathing still has a purpose, but only in times of extreme emotional arousal or physical challenge. "Most Americans use chest breathing because of developing instincts from fight-or-flight conditions," he says. It is in those types of physically dangerous situations that it is still necessary not for everyday stress or anxiety. Proper breathing is particularly important during moments of great anxiety. 34. 7 Steps to Center Yourself

Sleep comes easy to those who are satisfied with all aspects of their lives, not just their work productivity.

Take time to get in touch with yourself, your feelings, your dreams, and the way you want to live a good, healthy life.

    1. Admit the Importance of Sleep. Sometimes it seems as though our culture has begun to view the need for sleep as a sign of weakness. It's the new macho and women are buying into it big-time. But your body was genetically programmed to spend one-third of its life asleep and to sleep in specific cycles of light sleep, deep sleep, and active-brain sleep. Each cycle takes 90 minutes, and each has a specific assignment that affects thinking, memory, growth, your immune system, and even your weight. Trying to tuck anything that important into an hour here and an hour there just won't get the job done.

    2. Begin the Day in Gratitude. Take 10 minutes every morning to sit down, close your eyes, and give thanks for every one of the blessings in your life. Name each one and hold it in your thoughts. The sense of gratitude you'll experience will set a serene tone for the entire day and reduce a day's worth of stress hormones that can trigger insomnia that night.

    3. Strike a Balance. Toning down a tightly wired nervous system will encourage a balanced sleep/wake cycle, says Dr. Yan-Go. Think about tai chi, meditation, prayer, biofeedback, yoga OR any daily activity that allows you to cultivate a peaceful center and a sense of balance.

    4. Play with Friends. Studies at UCLA reveal that women who have healthy friendships and interactive relationships with their children actually sleep better. The "tend-and-befriend studies," as they are called, conducted by UCLA researcher Shelly Taylor, Ph.D., indicate that when women are stressed, they tend to their children and seek out other women, possibly an ancient survival mechanism that allowed women to band together to protect themselves and their families. The studies show that when this happens, a woman's level of a biochemical called oxytocin, which blocks cortisol, the body's chief stress chemical, is increased, allowing them to rest easier than their wired male counterparts.

    5. Use Guided Imagery. "Mind/body stuff really works in helping you get to sleep," says Cleveland therapist Belleruth Naparstek, M.S. The imagery seduces the brain into seeing and thinking about other things, while the voice tone, pacing, music, and images will persuade the ramped-up part of your nervous system that it's time to calm down. The imagery will shut down the adrenalin that's keeping you too aroused to sleep, and shoot some calming hormones into your nervous system. Slip a CD of guided imagery into your CD player, snuggle into bed, turn out the lights, and follow the imagery into sleep.

    6. Invoke the Relaxation Response. Okay, so it sounds kind of boring. Maybe even useless. But the fact remains that one study after another has demonstrated that progressive muscle relaxation and meditation will block the chemical effects of stress, anxiety, and 24/7 living on your brain even rebalance your neurochemistry. And practiced right before bed, that often means a night of deep, restorative sleep. Here's the 4-step method pioneered by Herbert Benson, M.D., a cardiologist who heads the Mind/Body Medical Institute in Boston. Choose a word that has deep personal meaning for you such as "peace." Close your eyes and focus your attention on the word. Repeat it silently to yourself. When your attention wanders, as it will, gently bring it back to the word. Take a deep breath and exhale. Begin to consciously relax each of your muscles from your face to your toes. When you're finished, continue to focus on your chosen word for another 10 to 15 minutes. Then allow yourself to gently move into sleep.

    7. Fight Brain Clutter. Every time you start thinking about bills or work or kids gone astray, turn your brain off and focus on something that is less stimulating, says sleep researcher Dr. Moline. One woman prays. Another meditates. A third dreams of what she's going to plant in her garden next spring. As long as it doesn't make you worry, you'll be asleep in no time.

  35. Law Jokes. Enjoy
    Source: Net of course

The following quotations are taken from official court records across the nation, showing how funny and embarrassing it is that recorders operate at all times in courts of law, so that even the slightest inadvertence is preserved for posterity.

    Lawyer: Are you sexually active?
Witness: No, I just lie there.

Lawyer: Do you know if your daughter has ever been involved in voodoo or the occult?
    Witness: We both do.
    Lawyer: Voodoo?
    Witness: We do.
    Lawyer: You do?
    Witness: Yes, voodoo.

Lawyer: "Was that the same nose you broke as a child?"
Witness: "I only have one, you know."

Lawyer: "Now, Mrs. Johnson, how was your first marriage terminated?"
    Witness: "By death."
Lawyer: "And by whose death was it terminated?"

Accused, Defending His Own Case: "Did you get a good look at my face when I took your purse?"
The defendant was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in jail.

Lawyer: "What is your date of birth?"
    Witness: "July 15th."
    Lawyer: "What year?"
    Witness: "Every year."

Lawyer: "Can you tell us what was stolen from your house?"
Witness: "There was a rifle that belonged to my father that was stolen from the hall closet."
Lawyer: "Can you identify the rifle?"
Witness: "Yes. There was something written on the side of it."
Lawyer: "And what did the writing say?"
    Witness: "'Winchester'!"

Lawyer: "What gear were you in at the moment of the impact?"
    Witness: "Gucci sweats and Reeboks."

Lawyer: "Can you describe what the person who attacked you looked like?"
Witness: "No. He was wearing a mask."
Lawyer: "What was he wearing under the mask?"
    Witness: "Er...his face."

Lawyer: "This myasthenia gravis -- does it affect your memory at all?"
    Witness: "Yes."
Lawyer: "And in what ways does it affect your memory?"
    Witness: "I forget."
Lawyer: "You forget. Can you give us an example of something that you've forgotten?"

Lawyer: "How old is your son, the one living with you?"
    Witness: "Thirty-eight or thirty-five, I can't remember which."
Lawyer: "How long has he lived with you?"
    Witness: "Forty-five years."

Lawyer: "What was the first thing your husband said to you when he woke that morning?"
Witness: "He said, 'Where am I, Cathy?'"

Witness: "Sure, I played for ten years. I even went to school for it."

Lawyer: "Trooper, when you stopped the defendant, were your red and blue lights flashing?"
    Witness: "Yes."
Lawyer: "Did the defendant say anything when she got out of her car?"
    Witness: "Yes, sir."
    Lawyer: "What did she say?"
Witness: "'What disco am I at?'"

Lawyer: "Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?"
    Witness: "No."
Lawyer: "Did you check for blood pressure?"
    Witness: "No."
Lawyer: "Did you check for breathing?"
    Witness: "No."
Lawyer: "So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?"
    Witness: "No."
Lawyer: "How can you be so sure, Doctor?"
Witness: "Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar."
Lawyer: "But could the patient have still been alive nevertheless?"
Witness: "Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law somewhere."

Lawyer: "How far apart were the vehicles at the time of the collision?"

Lawyer: "And you check your radar unit frequently?"
    Officer: "Yes, I do."
Lawyer: "And was your radar unit functioning correctly at the time you had the plaintiff on radar?"
Officer: "Yes, it was malfunctioning correctly."

    Lawyer: "What happened then?"
Witness: "He told me, he says, 'I have to kill you because you can identify me.'"
    Lawyer: "Did he kill you?"
    Witness: "No."

Lawyer: "Now sir, I'm sure you are an intelligent and honest man--"
Witness: "Thank you. If I weren't under oath, I'd return the compliment."

Lawyer: "You were there until the time you left, is that true?"

Lawyer: "So you were gone until you returned?"

Lawyer: "The youngest son, the 20 year old, how old is he?"

Lawyer: "Were you alone or by yourself?"

Lawyer: "How long have you been a French Canadian?"

Witness: "He was about medium height and had a beard."
Lawyer: "Was this a male or a female?"

Lawyer: "Mr. Slatery, you went on a rather elaborate honeymoon, didn't you?"
Witness: "I went to Europe, sir."
Lawyer: "And you took your new wife?"

Lawyer: "I show you Exhibit 3 and ask you if you recognize that picture."
    Witness: "That's me."
Lawyer: "Were you present when that picture was taken?"

Lawyer: "Were you present in court this morning when you were sworn in?"

Lawyer: "Do you know how far pregnant you are now?"
Witness: "I'll be three months on November 8."
Lawyer: "Apparently, then, the date of conception was August 8?"
    Witness: "Yes."
Lawyer: "What were you doing at that time?"

Lawyer: "How many times have you committed suicide?"
    Witness: "Four times."

Lawyer: "Do you have any children or anything of that kind?"

Lawyer: "She had three children, right?"
    Witness: "Yes."
    Lawyer: "How many were boys?"
    Witness: "None."
    Lawyer: "Were there girls?"

Lawyer: "You don't know what it was, and you didn't know what it looked like, but can you describe it?"

Lawyer: "You say that the stairs went down to the basement?"
    Witness: "Yes."
Lawyer: "And these stairs, did they go up also?"

Lawyer: "Have you lived in this town all your life?"
    Witness: "Not yet."

Lawyer: (realizing he was on the verge of asking a stupid question) "Your Honor, I'd like to strike the next question."

Lawyer: "Do you recall approximately the time that you examined the body of Mr. Eddington at the Rose Chapel?"
Witness: "It was in the evening. The autopsy started about 8:30pm."
Lawyer: "And Mr. Eddington was dead at the time, is that correct?"

Lawyer: "What is your brother-in-law's name?"
    Witness: "Borofkin."
    Lawyer: "What's his first name?"
    Witness: "I can't remember."
Lawyer: "He's been your brother-in-law for years, and you can't remember his first name?"
Witness: "No. I tell you, I'm too excited." (rising and pointing to his brother-in-law) "Nathan, for heaven's sake, tell them your first name!"

Lawyer: "Did you ever stay all night with this man in New York?"
Witness: "I refuse to answer that question.
Lawyer: "Did you ever stay all night with this man in Chicago?"
Witness: "I refuse to answer that question.

Lawyer: "What is your marital status?"
    Witness: "Fair."

    Lawyer: "Are you married?"
    Witness: "No, I'm divorced."
Lawyer: "And what did your husband do before you divorced him?"
Witness: "A lot of things I didn't know about."
Lawyer: "And who is this person you are speaking of?"
    Witness: "My ex-widow said it.

Lawyer: "How did you happen to go to Dr. Cherney?"
Witness: "Well, a gal down the road had had several of her children by Dr. Cherney and said he was really good."

Lawyer: "Doctor, how many autopsies have you performed on dead people?"
Witness: "All my autopsies have been performed on dead people."
Lawyer: "Were you acquainted with the deceased?"
    Witness: "Yes sir."
Lawyer: "Before or after he died?"

Lawyer: "Mrs. Jones, is your appearance this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney?"
Witness: "No. This is how I dress when I go to work."

The Court: "Now, as we begin, I must ask you to banish all present information and prejudice from your minds, if you have any."

Lawyer: "Did he pick the dog up by the ears?"
    Witness: "No."
Lawyer: "What was he doing with the dog's ears?"
Witness: "Picking them up in the air."
Lawyer: "Where was the dog at this time?"
    Witness: "Attached to the ears."

Lawyer: "When he went, had you gone and had she, if she wanted to and were able, for the time being excluding all the restraints on her not to go, gone also, would he have brought you, meaning you and she, with him to the station?"
Other Lawyer: "Objection. That question should be taken out and shot."

Lawyer: "And lastly, Gary, all your responses must be oral. Ok? What school do you go to?"
    Witness: "Oral."
    Lawyer: "How old are you?"
    Witness: "Oral."

Lawyer: "What is your relationship with the plaintiff?"
    Witness: "She is my daughter."
Lawyer: "Was she your daughter on February 13, 1979?"

Lawyer: "Now, you have investigated other murders, have you not, where there was a victim?"

Lawyer: "Now, doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, in most cases he just passes quietly away and doesn't know anything about it until the next morning?"

Lawyer: "And what did he do then?"
Witness: "He came home, and next morning he was dead."
Lawyer: "So when he woke up the next morning he was dead?"

Lawyer: "Did you tell your lawyer that your husband had offered you indignities?"
Witness: "He didn't offer me nothing. He just said I could have the furniture."

Lawyer: "So, after the anesthesia, when you came out of it, what did you observe with respect to your scalp?"
Witness: "I didn't see my scalp the whole time I was in the hospital."
    Lawyer: "It was covered?"
    Witness: "Yes, bandaged."
Lawyer: "Then, later on...what did you see?"
Witness: "I had a skin graft. My whole buttocks and leg were removed and put on top of my head."

Lawyer: "Could you see him from where you were standing?"
Witness: "I could see his head."
Lawyer: "And where was his head?"
    Witness: "Just above his shoulders."

Lawyer: "Do you drink when you're on duty?"
Witness: "I don't drink when I'm on duty, unless I come on duty drunk."

Lawyer: "Any suggestions as to what prevented this from being a murder trial instead of an attempted murder trial?"
    Witness: "The victim lived."

Lawyer: "The truth of the matter is that you were not an unbiased, objective witness, isn't it? You too were shot in the fracas."
Witness: "No, sir. I was shot midway between the fracas and the naval."

Lawyer: "Officer, what led you to believe the defendant was under the influence?"
Witness: "Because he was argumentary, and he couldn't pronunciate his words."

  36. I just happy to share with you a story that will change your mind. Take the moral from here...

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.

Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.”

Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.
As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.

Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.
He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, “And think of me.”
He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.

A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin.

There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.”
Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.

Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard….
She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything’s going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”
There is an old saying “What goes around comes around.”

  37. GLOBAL WARMING: Earth Hour is a total farce

AS the lights went out for Earth Hour on March 28, organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to protest against man-made global warming, our scientist family did exactly the opposite.

Therefor, we switched on every single light in our energy-efficient houses. We held this mini festival of lights to say that mankind's increasing use of electricity has nothing to do with global warming.

This is immoral and an insult to everything we have achieved. Electricity got us out of poverty and built Malaysia . It transformed society. If anyone messes up our electricity supply, it's back to oil lamps and padi farming. That's what our youth don't realise. But now the WWF is trying to convince youth to feel guilty about consuming electricity.

Global warming is a perfectly natural phenomenon. Ten-thousand-year global warming periods followed by 100,000-year ice ages have occurred with some regularity for the last two million years and probably throughout much of the 4.5 billion years of life on Earth.

What causes climate change is the Earth's varying tilt and elliptical orbit around the sun and our solar system's long journey through the Milky Way, together with cosmic radiation from exploding stars. Most of this basic science has been known for 100 years.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is not an environmental poison but has been named by 10 generations of scientists as "the gas of life" which, by photosynthesis in green plants, gets converted to organic matter. The small additional carbon dioxide produced by industrial man is a bonus, not a threat to life.

Our rainforest climate is Earth's best example of the tremendous benefits of global warming and higher levels of CO2. Malaysia's constantly warm climate, high rainfall, abundant sunshine and high natural CO2 levels, caused by plentiful rotting vegetation, combine to produce the highest rate of biomass production in the world.

The kenaf tree in Malaysia can grow to five metres in four months. A new Malaysian grass plantation is producing sustainable one-metre cut grass for climate-housed cows every 30 days. This Malaysian invention, deep tropical agriculture, can transform food production and, with cheap desalinated water and electricity from new "inherently safe" fourth-generation nuclear power stations, can spread throughout the dry tropical regions of the world, even deserts.

Hence we all should geter in a team to solve this enviroment problem in order to save our future generation.

  38. SEX EDUCATION: Parents are the best teachers.

SEX education is a very delicate issue but a necessity for our children, both boys and girls, to be given the true picture from a very young age. This will also is a lesson for them to know more about what is sex?

The more this subject is kept taboo, the more curious children would be to discuss, explore and experience what sex is about. This could be very dangerous as the wrong things could be communicated without regard of consequences. This could ruin innocent lives and families, and give rise to a host of social problems.

The best teachers, I believe, are parents themselves, regardless of the discomfort this may bring. We need to explain to children the changes in their bodies as they mature, the monthly cycles women go through and the beauty of bringing new life into the world. They must realise that sex is something beautiful, not dirty, but at the right time and place, and when ready for the consequences.

This would also be a good time to teach our young to respect themselves and their bodies and not allow themselves to be victims of abuse or sexual blackmail. We must empower them with the ability to say "No".
On a more general basis, sex education should also be introduced in schools as part of the school curriculum or as separate sessions.

Teachers should be equipped to handle the giggles and wisecracks that will arise on such a topic, and professionally communicate these facts of life. I would propose doing this in upper primary school as this is when puberty begins.

Therefore, it should be started from a younger level to let them involve in sex education so that they know what to do when facing SEX problem.

  39. Hai .this week i am going to go very mystical. This week i am going to talk about dragons.Like most mythological creatures, dragons are perceived in different ways by different cultures. Dragons are sometimes said to breathe and spit fire or poison, and ice. They are commonly portrayed as serpentine or reptilian, hatching from eggs and possessing typically feathered or scaly bodies. They are sometimes portrayed as having large yellow or red eyes, a feature that is the origin for the word for dragon in many cultures. They are sometimes portrayed with a row of dorsal spines, keeled scales, or leathery bat-like wings. Winged dragons are usually portrayed only in European dragons while Oriental versions of the dragon resemble large snakes. Dragons can have a variable number of legs: none, two, four, or more when it comes to early European literature. Dragons always hate mirrors.[citation needed] Also, some dragons in Greek literature were known to have millions of legs at a time. Modern depictions of dragons tend to be larger than their original representations, which were often smaller than humans, but grew in the myths and tales of man over the years.

Although dragons occur in many legends around the world, different cultures have varying stories about monsters that have been grouped together under the dragon label.

Dragons are often held to have major spiritual significance in various religions and cultures around the world. In many Asian cultures dragons were, and in some cultures still are, revered as representative of the primal forces of nature, religion and the universe. They are associated with wisdom—often said to be wiser than humans—and longevity. They are commonly said to possess some form of magic or other supernatural power, and are often associated with wells, rain, and rivers. In some cultures, they are also said to be capable of human speech.

The term dragoon, for infantry that moved around on horseback yet still fought as foot soldiers, is derived from their early firearm, the "dragon", a wide-bore musket that spat flame when it fired, and was thus named for the mythical creature.

  40. My hobbies
Everyone have their own hobby..same as me...i want to share to all of you about my hobby..my hobby is gardening, reading and watching tv...
Gardening is the art of growing plants with the goal of crafting a purposeful landscape. Residential gardening most often takes place in or about a residence, in a space referred to as the garden. Although a garden typically is located on the land near a residence, it may also be located in a roof, in an atrium, on a balcony, in a windowbox, or on a patio or vivarium.A gardenerGardening also takes place in non-residential green areas, such as parks, public or semi-public gardens (botanical gardens or zoological gardens), amusement and theme parks, along transportation corridors, and around tourist attractions and hotels. In these situations, a staff of gardeners or groundskeepers maintains the gardens.Indoor gardening is concerned with the growing of houseplants within a residence or building, in a conservatory, or in a greenhouse. Indoor gardens are sometimes incorporated as part of air conditioning or heating systems.Water gardening is concerned with growing plants adapted to pools and ponds. Bog gardens are also considered a type of water garden. These all require special conditions and considerations. A simple water garden may consist solely of a tub containing the water and plant(s).
Reading, like reading books, magazines, comics, pie charts or newspapers, is very common.Television is a widely used telecommunication medium. Loyal devotion to television shows allows the viewer to deeply connect with the programmes and achieve personal fulfillment. People who watch television as a hobby are also given the opportunity to exercise, de-stress, or be constructive in other ways. This allows one to save massive amounts of time. Watching factual programmes like the news or documentaries or PBS allows the viewer to know what is going on in the world and be an active part of the global community.

  41. Disadvantages of Smoking
The ingredients of tobacco smoke are chemically active. They can start dramatic and fatal changes in the body. There are over 4,000 chemicals, which can be damaging to the smoker's body. They include tar, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide, metals, ammonia, and radioactive compounds.
Scientists and doctors know so much more about the effects of smoking today than ever before. They know smoking causes immediate effects on the smoker's body. It constricts the airways of the lungs. It increases the smoker's heart rate. It elevates the smoker's blood pressure. The carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke deprives the tissues of the smoker's body of much-needed oxygen. All of these are dangerous short-term effects.
There are more serious long-term effects as well. Smoked tobacco in the forms of cigarettes, pipes, and cigars causes lung cancers, emphysema, and other respiratory diseases. In fact, smoking causes ninety percent of all lung cancer cases. Twenty percent of heavy smokers get the chronic lung disease called emphysema, which causes the narrowing, and clogging of the airway passages in the lungs. This disease is seldom seen in nonsmokers. Smokers are also at least four times more likely to develop oral and laryngeal cancer than nonsmokers.
Smoking contributes to heart disease. It increases the risk of stroke by nearly 40% among men and 60% among women. Smoking is an addiction. Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a drug that is addictive and can make it very hard, but not impossible, to quit. More than 400,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are from smoking-related illnesses. Smoking greatly increases your risks for lung cancer and many other cancers.
Smoking harms not just the smoker, but also family members, coworkers and others who breathe the smoker's cigarette smoke, called secondhand smoke.Among infants to 18 months of age, secondhand smoke is associated with as many as 300,000 cases of bronchitis and pneumonia each year. Secondhand smoke from a parent's cigarette increases a child's chances for middle ear problems, causes coughing and wheezing, and worsens asthma conditions
If both parents smoke, a teenager is more than twice as likely to smoke as a young person whose parents are both non-smokers. In households where only one parent smokes, young people are also more likely to start smoking.
Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to deliver babies whose weights are too low for the baby's good health. If all women quit smoking during pregnancy, about 4,000 new babies would not die each year.

  42. Caffeine and Health Problems

    1) HEARTBURN - In some people, coffee has been shown to relax the sphincter muscles at the lower end of the esophagus, allowing the stomach contents to "back up" into the esophagus; this is called heartburn. Caffeine alone has no effect on the sphincter muscles, so other substances in coffee apparently cause the heartburn.

    2) ULCERS - Caffeine can increase the secretion of both acid and pepsin in the stomach, which could exacerbate an existing ulcer. However, since both "regular" and decaffeinated coffees have also been shown to stimulate the gastric mucosa and increase stomach acid secretion, caffeine is probably not the only component of coffee responsible.

    3) FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE - In the late '70's and '80's, several well-publicized studies linked caffeine consumption with benign fibrocystic breast disease (FBD). More recent investigations, however, have not supported these findings. Individual women may notice a decrease in palpable breast lumps, the symptoms of FBD, when they limit their caffeine intake, although research has not shown a direct association.

    4) HEART PROBLEMS - Caffeine has been shown to cause cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) in certain individuals; often persons with heart disease are told to avoid caffeine altogether. However, no evidence shows that caffeine is a causative factor in the development of heart disease. Also see "Has coffee drinking been linked to heart disease?" in this section.

    5) HEART DISEASE - The relationship between coffee drinking and heart disease has been investigated in numerous studies but strong, independent risks associated with coffee drinking have not been clearly documented. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute recently found heavy coffee drinkers (defined as five or more cups per day) were two to three times more likely to have coronary heart disease than were nondrinkers (NEJM, October 16, 1986). This relationship was true even when accounting for other important risk factors such as age, smoking habits, serum cholesterol and blood pressure.

This article is about the effect of caffeine. From that we know the caffeine is not good. So please take a caffeine in your drink. If coffee drinking does increase the risk of heart disease, it may do so through its effect on cholesterol. A few studies have linked heavy coffee consumption to elevated total serum cholesterol, although caffeine alone does not seem to be responsible. Perhaps it's not even the coffee, but a high saturated fat diet among heavy coffee drinkers that's increasing the risk of heart disease. Increased coffee consumption by men has been associated with increased calorie consumption from fat and increased cholesterol intake.

  44. PESTICIDES
Pesticides are carried in rainwater runoff from farm fields, suburban lawns, or roadside embankments into the nearest creeks and streams. Here are some noteworthy examples of the effects of pesticide water pollution:

    • The US EPA has found widespread contamination of waterways by Atrazine, the most commonly used herbicide in the US. Atrazine causes feminization of male frogs even at concentrations in water as low as 0.1 part per billion. Atrazine water pollution has been noted in many countries, including South Africa, Germany, and Denmark. Natural Resources Defense Council notes that studies indicate the chemical may be linked to a number of human cancers, including prostate cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, as well as hormonal problems that could disrupt reproductive and developmental processes.
    • Glyphosate (Roundup), another of the world's most common herbicides, was found to cause a 70% decline in frog biodiversity and an 86% decline in the total mass of tadpoles when the glyphosate got into water.
    • Pesticides have been found in well water in countries such as India, The Netherlands, Italy, Israel, Japan, Canada and Australia. Pesticide contamination of drinking water is a particular problem in rural agricultural areas where pesticide use is heavy and drinking water supplies come directly from groundwater or surface water.
    • Pesticides can migrate via water into the food chain as well, ultimately being consumed by humans or animals in food.
    • In the most infamous case of pesticide pollution, widespread use of the insecticide DDT polluted waterways, contaminating fish, and ultimately poisoning bald eagles (and other animals) that ate the fish. DDE, the principal breakdown product of DDT, built up in the fatty tissues of female eagles and prevented sufficient calcium being released to produce strong egg shells. The thin shells would break when the parents sat on the eggs to keep them warm. DDT affected many other species as well.
    • In terms of general human health effects, pesticides can ...
    o affect and damage the nervous system;
    o cause liver damage;
    o damage DNA and cause a variety of cancers;
    o cause reproductive and endocrine damage;
o cause other acutely toxic or chronic effects.

  46. “Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater.”
    ~Albert Einstein ~

I love these words. I’d been giving up with maths so many times before. I don’t know how to score better. I really have no idea how and where to start learning maths. It was so terrible. Not because of me myself but when I compare my result with my friends. It’s actually a kind of embarrassment and pressure.

However somehow one day I found this short quote from Einstein. Then I realize one thing, Score is nothing to do with your brain. It is your heart that not ready enough to get the score.....

It is obviously true...hardworking, patient, never give up....All those strong determinations can only be set by the spirit deep in my heart.

  47. Bring Back The Smile...

In a war torn country a sister was separated from his younger brother. Been missing for 6 months she feared the worst - his brother, the one she cared for and loved the most is shot dead by the enemy. She can't even bear to see the door of his brother's room. Her mind keep recalling how his brother would happily come out of it, greet everybody and eager to learn new things. His smile, his laughter, his energy - she sorely miss it. The pain is so much that smile began to fade from her face. One day, her smile was gone. Together with her voice and her will to live.

She saw troops coming, but it is not the enemies. They are peacekeepers and relief workers. The troops seems to be looking for something, using devices that looks like mine detectors. But that's odd as the place have been cleared of mines last week. Then the troops started digging. Not just a few troop but almost the whole squad together with machinery. As they dig deeper and deeper only then she realize what they are doing. They are digging a mass grave, a proof of the enemy's ruthlessness.

Lots of bodies are uncovered. The stench unbearable. The bodies wrangled like vines of a writhing tree.

"My brother is one of them," she said to herself.

    That breaks her heart.

The troops worked round the clock to identify each body. Using whatever tools and information that they have to put a name to the lifeless bodies.

True enough, her fears come true. The news hit her like a rushing train. She felt herself being knocked out of this world. She lost the reason to live, the world is meaningless to her.

The troops symphatize her but they are hapless in the matters of the heart. They can't even say soothing words to her as they don't speak her language. Then come a small relief team, not troops but an NGO. The troops meet up with the group and asked, "Do you have a psychiatrist among you?".

The group leader pointed to the team psychiatrist - a doctor. The troop told him of the story of the girl and then bring the doctor to her.

The doctor also don't speak the girl's language yet he shared the same faith as her. As opposed to the troops whom doesn't have anything in common with her. The doctor counselled her through an interpreter, a fellow sister whom her study for a degree halted because of the war. The interpreter not only convey the words from the doctor to the girl and vice versa but also together with the emotions. The doctor reminds her to hold fast to God, and the reasons why she must go on with life.

That opened her heart a little. She began to smile again after months without any smile.

The doctor thanked Allah, grateful that he helped to bring back a smile, and a life.

  48. Relationship Rescue - 5 Easy Tips To Rebuild Your Relationship
Breaking of relationship between couples can happen due to various reasons. If you are someone looking for relationship rescue, then there are 5 easy and yet effective tips, which you can follow to rebuild your relationship.
Let us look at these tips and find out how they can help you to reestablish your relationship with your loved one.

Create time: In a vast majority of cases, if you were to look carefully, relationships tend to break up because both the partners are not spending enough time with each other. Any relationship rescue effort should therefore start with establishing time for yourself and your partner in nurturing your relationship.

Be patient: Being patient holds the key to relationship rescue. You will need to remember that no one in this world is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and if you truly love someone, you will tend to forgive their mistakes and move on. Similarly you must also make every effort in admitting mistakes if you have made any. This will only strengthen your relationship.

Praise: You should always try praising your partner for even little things that they may have done. Remember, constant criticism is going to take you nowhere. Be honest and admire even small gestures from your partner.

Listen: Many of us are so preoccupied with talking about our own problems that we do not tend to listen to what others have to say. Any relationship rescue will start only if you are willing to listen to well wishers. You should also be willing to listen to your spouse’s viewpoint, ever so patiently. This will help in putting the relationship back on track.

Get rid of emotional baggage: Let bygones be bygones and try and move on in your relationship. After all, viewing things in a positive manner and talking to your significant other half, is what is relationship rescue all about.

  49. Where did Soccer Originate
Today soccer has become the most popular sport all over the world. Do you know where did it originate?
Soccer is played by two teams and each team has a maximum of eleven players. Soccer originated in England in the early 19th century. In 1800, only the aristocrats and the nobles played soccer. Gradually, this game caught the interest of the ordinary people.

In 1863, London Football Association was formed in England. In 1871, FA had almost fifty member clubs. It was the beginning of the football world cup.

The first international football match was played between Scotland and England in 1872. Fergus Suter and John Love were the two people who were awarded for their aptitude in football.

In 1873, 1875 and 1880 Football Association of Scotland, Wales and Ireland were formed respectively.

Gradually, other European countries including Netherlands and Denmark adopted soccer in 1889 and formed their respective football associations.

In 1891, New Zealand established its first soccer association. In 1893, Argentina formed its soccer association. In 1895, Chile, Switzerland and Belgium formed their soccer teams and established their football associations. Three years later Italy founded their soccer association. The countries that established their presence in the field of soccer include Germany and Uruguay in 1900, Hungary in 1901 and Finland in 1907.

Soccer was formally introduced as an Olympic sport in the 1900 Olympics.

In 1904, Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in Paris. Initially, it had only seven founder member countries. They were Belgium, France, Netherlands Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Switzerland. In the 21st century, there are as many as 204 members in FIFA. In 1913, the Americans formed their soccer organization, United States Soccer Federation (USSF). Today, there is so much content available to read about American football. The 1st World Cup international competition was held in 1930.

  50. Foods that Decrease Blood Sugar
The body's blood sugar level responds to the presence of certain foods. This is mapped on a Glycemic Index or GI. The increase in the level of blood sugar results in a diabetic condition. Diabetes cannot be completely cured, it can only be prevented and kept in check.
The human anatomy comprises a series of complicated networks and the most amazing life supporting human body systems. One of the networks that has been recently highlighted is that of the organs affected by hyperglycemia or increased blood sugar.

Factors that Influence the Blood Sugar Response to Certain Foods:

The glycemic index gives the diabetic and family members an understanding of the foods that need to be avoided or made part of controlled intake when dealing with juvenile diabetes or adult type-1 diabetes. However, it is not easy to read the chart and it needs interpretation. Hence, implementing certain diabetes related changes to the diet should involve the intervention of a dietician or diabetologist.

People react differently to different foods. The difference in response of one person's body to a particular food to another depends a lot on age, activity, insulin levels and the quantity of fiber and fat in the food. The other factors that have to be considered are the extent to which the food is processed and general meal accompaniments. Before setting a diet for diabetes treatment, it is important to also consider the ratio of carbohydrates to fat/protein and the general metabolism. All these factors play a very important role in determining the response of the blood sugar level after consuming certain foods.

    Foods that Decrease Blood Sugar:

Clinical analysis and the entries on the GI have identified foods that decrease or control blood sugar. Though these foods don't really lower the blood sugar levels, the subsequent increase is very low and controlled. The other external factors also need to be considered when narrowing down on a diabetic diet.

Foods rich in carbohydrates are usually associated with high blood sugar levels, due to the higher ranking on the glycemic index. These foods, once identified help to subsequently identify a low carb diet that decreases or controls blood sugar levels. White bread, pastas and even potatoes rank high. However, consumption of wholegrain and rye bread helps control blood sugar. Other foods that decrease or control blood sugar include:
    • breakfast cereals made from wheat bran, oats and barley
    • fruits
    • lentils
    • soybeans and baked beans
    • skimmed milk
    • cinnamon coated food
    • lamb, oysters, chicken and sardines
    • almonds
    • Salacia oblonga herb
    • multi grain breads
    • jacket potatoes
    • wholewheat pasta

  52. SMOKERS: Kelantan should become first tobacco-free state
    By : M.H.N.M., Kuantan

I APPLAUD the support of Mohamad Rosli Ng of Cheras for Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat's statement that "Smokers are more despicable than cows" (NST, March 28).

The National Fatwa Council passed an edict on March 23, 1995, that smoking is haram (strictly forbidden) for Muslims. This was after much deliberation using evidence from the Quran and Hadith, plus available scientific findings which exposed the addictiveness of nicotine and the harmful effects of tobacco use.

More than 13 years have passed since the fatwa declaration but only a handful of states have gazetted it; whether it is enforced in any state is questionable. Hence, the reminder by Nik Aziz is apt and relevant. Being a respected religious scholar and leader who does not smoke, Nik Aziz should find it easy to gazette and implement the fatwa in Kelantan,

Incidentally, efforts are being made to ensure that the two holiest cities in Islam -- Mecca and Medina -- are not just smoke-free but literally tobacco-free. Creating such smoke-free environments will protect non-smokers in addition to preventing premature deaths from tobacco-related diseases.

On the contrary, Muslims in Kelantan can smoke and use any tobacco products without fear or trepidation. Nik Aziz should set the example by declaring immediately that Kelantan becomes the first tobacco-free state in Malaysia.

    My comments:
I agree with some opinions in this article. Smoking brings many harmful effects to health of people. Government should carry out some steps to reduce the number of smokers in Malaysia. For examples, government should enforce the laws to reduce the amount of tobacco which are imported from foreign countries. Besides, government can organize some campaigns and invite people to deliver speeches about the harmful effects to people so they will have awareness about the tobacco products. Government should put the awareness among the children since they are young. As a result, most of them will become smokers in the future. Parents play an important role to solve this problem too. They should teach them about the effects of smoking and alwats spend time to understand their children even though they are busy. Therefore, the children will not smoke and have a wonderful life when they are growing up.

Fresh tobacco, processed tobacco, and tobacco smoke contain carcinogens. The current view on cancer is that carcinogenicity is a stochastic effect, where various environmental factors trigger the development of cancer. While exposure to a carcinogen increases the probability of cancer, the process remains random. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart and lungs, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), emphysema, and cancer. What is COPD? In smoking, long term exposure to compounds found in the smoke such as carbon monoxide, cyanide, and so forth, are believed to be responsible for pulmonary damage and for loss of elasticity in the alveoli, leading to emphysema and COPD. The carcinogen acrolein and its derivatives also contribute to the chronic inflammation present in COPD. In addition, smokers report a variety of physical and psychological effects from smoking tobacco. Those new to smoking may experience nausea, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat. The unpleasant symptoms will eventually vanish over time, with repeated use, as the body builds a tolerance to the chemicals in the cigarettes, such as nicotine. The usage of tobacco also creates cognitive dysfunction, which include: increased risk (or decrease) of Alzheimer's disease and decline in cognitive abilities, reduced memory and cognitive abilities in adolescent smokers, brain shrinkage (cerebral atrophy). The smoking affects the health of smokers and people surrounding. In conclusion, smoking is a very dangerous action. For your sake, you should not smoke and advise people surrounding not to smoke too.

  53. A life with music

Music plays an essential role in our life. It gives life to the soul as food does to the body. It becomes the voice of the heart when plain words fall short of expressing how we feel. Music is first introduced to us by our mothers, our beloved musicians. The lullabies sang to us by our mothers when we were still small, in whatever language, notes or tune, have always been a delight to the little hearts. A melody forever playing in our mind.

  54. Is it ok to love myself?

Love comes from within, the very core of who we are, from what we want and what we desire.

We all have questioned at one time or another in our lives the real meaning of love and what it represents in the world around us. We look towards others to try and find answers that define truth of love through giving and taking, sacrifice and all the things people consider love to entail. There are even times when we think we are considering another in love which instead leads to displaying the opposite to what the person is wanting, only making evident the real fact that we do not truly know love and what it really means to understand it at the core of what it is.

We dream up scenarios of love making with people we want to get close to, we define that it is the feeling that makes us want to bust inside of our chest with laughter and happiness. Love then could be defined on all the moments that we feel happy and satisfied in our lives with the people we have around us and the things that we are doing. Love then is defined on moments of ‘self’ happiness, and this is the truth of the real core of what love is, starting within ourselves.

Someone in our society defined on such logic as loving themselves is seen as egotistic and unrealistic, only ever focusing on the foundation of what they can themselves get in life and singularly achieve. What if this egotism and self satisfaction were to be seen in a totally different way and was instead defined on the truth of love rather than on a justification of love seen from righteousness. Showing that it is ok to love ones self for the very nature of what they want, giving true value to who they are and what they have to offer as a whole.

  56. 9 Tips in Life that Lead to Happiness

Are you truly happy? Do you even know what it means to be happy and what it takes to achieve happiness? These are important questions for anyone who is seeking happiness to ask themselves. I live my life to maintain my own happiness while trying my best to not cause unhappiness to anyone else. If you want to be happy you need to understand that you can be happy and that you should be happy. Many people make the mistake of believing that they don’t deserve happiness and accept their unhappy state as their destiny. The truth of the matter is that happiness, like anything else in life, needs to be nurtured. The following are a few tips that I follow to create happiness in my life.

    1. Understand what it is that will make you happy. Everyone has unique requirements for attaining happiness and what makes one person happy may be very different from what makes someone else happy. Revel in your individuality and do not worry about whether or not your desires are comparable to those of your peers.

    2. Make a plan for attaining goals that you believe will make you happy. Your mood will very likely increase as your pursue your goal because you will feel better about yourself for going after something you value.

    3. Surround yourself with happy people. It is easy to begin to think negatively when you are surrounded by people who think that way. Conversely, if you are around people who are happy their emotional state will be infectious.

    4. When something goes wrong try to figure out a solution instead of wallowing in self pity. Truly happy people don’t allow set backs to affect their mood because they know that with a little thought they can turn the circumstances back to their favor.

    5. Spend a few minutes each day thinking about the things that make you happy. These few minutes will give you the opportunity to focus on the positive things in your life and will lead you to continued happiness.

    6. It’s also important to take some time each day to do something nice for yourself. Whether you treat yourself to lunch, take a long, relaxing bath or simply spend a few extra minutes on your appearance you will be subconsciously putting yourself in a better mood.

    7. Finding the humor in situations can also lead to happiness. While there are times that require you to be serious, when it is appropriate, find a way to make light of a situation that would otherwise make you unhappy.

    8. Maintaining your health is another way to achieve happiness. Being overweight or not eating nutritious foods can have a negative effect on your mood. Additionally, exercise has been known to release endorphins that give you a feeling of happiness.

    9. Finally, it is important to understand that you deserve happiness. Those who believe that they are not worthy of happiness may subconsciously sabotage their efforts to achieve happiness. If necessary, tell yourself each day that you deserve to be happy and remind yourself what steps you will take to achieve the happiness you desire.

Happiness is hard to define but most people are aware of whether they are happy or not. Many people believe that happiness is a form of luck and that some people are destined to be happy while others are destined to be unhappy. I try to incorporate the tips above into my life and have had great success in achieving happiness. The tips in this article are small but meaningful steps that you can take each day to lead you to true happiness.

  57. Why is breakfast the most important meal of the day?
A healthy breakfast refuels your body and replenishes your blood sugar (glucose), giving you the energy necessary to start a new day. In addition, a growing body of evidence indicates that breakfast is good for both your physical and mental health. Studies show that people who eat breakfast — especially a healthy breakfast — are more likely to:
    >>>consume more vitamins and minerals and less fat and cholesterol during the day. While the reason is unclear, one study claims that increasing daily eating frequency is associated with consuming more favorable nutrients and fewer less favorable nutrients, such as dietary cholesterol.
    >>>Have better concentration and be more productive throughout the morning. Researchers believe this is due to replenishing glucose, the brain's main energy source.
    >>>Control their weight. There are several theories behind the association between eating breakfast and controlling weight. Researchers speculate that eating breakfast may reduce hunger later in the day, or that it may cause eaters to choose less-dense foods at later meals. Eating breakfast regularly may simply be an indicator of someone who adopts a low-calorie, low-fat diet.
    >>>Have more strength and endurance. People who eat breakfast — and thus have higher energy levels — may engage in more physical activity than may people who don't eat breakfast.
    >>>Have lower cholesterol, which reduces the risk of heart disease. Research has shown that people who eat breakfast consume less dietary cholesterol than do people who don't eat breakfast.

  58. This is the best song I like the most when I feel hopeless....

    YOU ARE NEVER ALONE....

Sometimes, when the world's not on your side

You don't know where to run to

You don't know where to hide.

You gaze, at the stars in the sky

    At the mountains so high

Through the tears in your eyes.

    Looking for a reason,

    to replace what is gone.

    Just remember, remember

    That you are never alone.

You are never alone (you are never alone)

    Just reach into your heart

    And Allah is always there.

You are never alone (you are never alone)

    Through sorrow and through grief

    Through happiness and peace

    You are never alone.

So now as you long for your past

    Prepare for your future

But knowing nothings going to last

You see this life is but a road

    A straight and narrow path

    To our final abode

    So travel well O Muslim

And Paradise will be your home

    And always remember

    That you are never alone.

You are never alone (you are never alone)

    Just reach into your heart

    And Allah is always there.

You are never alone (Allah is there)

    Through sorrow and through grief

    Through happiness and peace

Safety Tips To Follow When Dealing With Dangerous Substances

    1. Leave it to the expert
If you work in a laboratory of chemicals, and you are not yet trained to handle dangerous substances, it is best if you leave this job to the experts. Some people are specially trained to handle chemicals such as corrosive substances and they know exactly what to do. These people are known as approved handlers. They have proper training and knowledge of these chemicals and have sought certification making them highly qualified to do this job. Certifications are not issued to people who have not passed the requirements as mandated by the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Personnel Qualifications) Regulations 2001.

    2. Implement risk assessments
It pays to have a thorough check of the safety materials used in handling these dangerous substances from time to time, maintain a safe working environment to prevent slides due to uneven floorings, and for the workers to undergo a comprehensive check up every now and then. In this way, you are hitting two birds with one stone, which is to prevent accidents before they happen and to protect health at all times.

    3. Go easy with the moving of chemicals
At work, it is impossible not to move these chemicals from one place to another. Of course, you need to deliver them as well to your clients or customers once orders have been placed. The act of carrying the chemicals themselves can be very dangerous if not done properly. Hence, it is important to implement or train workers on appropriate posture when lifting and carrying boxes that contain these chemicals or use lifters to aid them in transporting the boxes from one area to another.

  60. Recently, Sony Ericsson has come out a several new model phone. First model phone is called cyber-walkaman-phone. Before this Sony Ericsson always released with seperate technology phone like Walkman phone, Cybershot phone and anything. But know, Sony combine the both technology to become Cyber-Walkman-phone.

Wow!!! This phone is called Sony Ericsson W902.A phone like no other or a quick-fix Cyber-shot Walkman mongrel trying to pass off as a hip novelty - you can call the Sony Ericsson W902 whatever you like, but it will still be the best camera phone among music phones. The 5 megapixel auto focus camera opens a new chapter in the Walkman book, while everything else about the W902 walks and talks multimedia. Based on the excellent Sony Ericsson feature phone interface, you get all sorts of treats like the top-of-the-line Media Centre with screen auto rotation, Shake control and Senses.

There may be hardly anything else to wish for in a feature phone, though GPS and Wi-Fi in the latest Walkmans might make the W902 stumble a bit. But it still has a special place booked in the hearts of brand loyal fans that are no longer forced to choose between imaging and music, Walkman and Cyber-shot.

I want to buy this phone immediately but I need to consider the prize also. The feature is really good comparing other phone. So thats all I want to share with you all. Stay tune.

This time in Beijing , China also surfer in mudslide .May be this is not a very big news as the Si Chuan earthquake but I think that this still a big lost in a country . Imagine if this “small” cases face in our Malaysia I am sure that this will be the big news in Malaysia .It is because our country is not as big as the China and we seldom facing this kind of nature disaster .

One of the victim said the flow of mud and rock destroyed a three-storey office building, a market and houses in the valley and this happen in few minutes .Wau …. I really can not imagine how powerful is the natural .Even this accident is not cause as serious as Si Chuan earthquake but the dead number still show there are the dead .May be this is not related to our but try to think if it happen to us .I am sure we feel difficult to handle this . ISA or no ISA?

    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/4/7/nation/20090407192347&sec=nation

The ISA act has been misused a couple a times in the past few years. Many times it has been considered misused by the government in a means to protect their own agenda. This has struck fear in the heart of the people to question and government of their actions. Fact is , criticism is an important step in moving forward. When the people are afraid to criticise the leaders , our country will not grow.

Najib’s words that the ISA will not be misused is quite hard to believe. Truth is as long as the act is around , people will continue to be afraid. To be honest , I don’t think the ISA is still needed as the laws we already have are sufficient in protecting the people and our country. Nonetheless , if Najib’s administration can stand by his words , then all is good. Let us hope that this is not merely a gimmick to gain votes in the tri-elections.

  63. Through an article states that listen to music can calm you down. But you have to choose the appropriate music. Not too loud, not too slow and not too sentimental.Choose some songs that smooth, nice, and meaningful. As this can help you revel in the song and calm your mind.Better sing it loud if the lyrics related your present mood as this can help you release your tension on what you have been faced.Don't control yourself when listen to the music you like and try to put yourself into the music and dance if can. This is really help as nowadays music is the first and safest entertainment in human life.No music make our life bored. But try not addicted in music as this can make you fantasy in the music industry and day dreaming.Hence, make it balance in your life and try not too dependent on music as human being need to face the reality in life although not willing to do so.Be optimistic and patient.Your life can be beautiful.

  65. Discipline

The word "discipline" is associated most frequently with school life. It is, perhaps, useful at this juncture to examine the meaning of the term. The dictionary defines "discipline" as "instruction: training and mode of life in accordance with rules: subjection to control.." It has the same origin as the word "disciple" meaning "pupil", "follower". It is in school, especially, that discipline is thought with reference to all aspects of the definition given. A schoolboy is given instruction in various subjects; he is trained and shown a mode reasonable existence which will fit him for adult life; and, to his repeated annoyance, he is subject to constant control.

"Discipline" must be distinguished from " order" with which it is frequently confused. Order is the condition which results from discipline. But order may be imposed from without. Discipline, finally, comes from within. True discipline is always self-discipline. The aim of all schooling is to teach children to discipline themselves; to guarantee that order will result from a child's recognition of the fact that order is utterly necessary. Discipline certainly cannot be based on mere fear of authority. For, as a child approaches adulthood, it is moving more and more away from the figures of authority. A person becomes more and mire independent as he grow up. With this growing sense of independence must also grow a sense of discipline and respect for the rights of others.

  66. He was in the first third grade class I taught Saint Mary's School in Morris, Minn. All 34 of my students were dear to me, but Mark Eklund was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, but had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made even his occasional mischievousness delightful. Mark talked incessantly. I had to remind him again and again that talking without permission was not acceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was his sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving - "Thank you for correcting me, Sister!"I didn't know what to make of it at first, but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day. One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often, and then I made a novice teacher's mistake. I looked at Mark and said, "If you say one more word, I am going to tape your mouth shut!" It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck blurted out, "Mark is talking again." I hadn't asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it. I remember the scene as if it had occurred this morning. I walked to my desk, very deliberately opened my drawer and took out a roll of masking tape. Without saying a word, I proceeded to Mark's desk, tore off two pieces of tape and made a big X with them over his mouth. I then returned to the front of the room. As I glanced at Mark to see how he was doing, he winked at me. That did it!! I started laughing. The class cheered as I walked back to Mark's desk, removed the tape, and shrugged my shoulders. His first words were, "Thank you for correcting me, Sister." At the end of the year, I was asked to teach junior-high math. The years flew by, and before I knew it Mark was in my classroom again. He was more handsome than ever and just as polite. Since he had to listen carefully to my instruction in the "new math," he did not talk as much in ninth grade as he had in third. One Friday, things just didn't feel right. We had worked hard on a new concept all week, and I sensed that the students were frowning, frustrated with themselves and edgy with one another.I had to stop this crankiness before it got out of hand. So I asked them to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then I told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed me the papers. Charlie smiled. Mark said, "Thank you for teaching me, Sister. Have a good weekend." That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and I listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday I gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. Really?" I heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" "I didn't know others liked me so much." No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. I never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The studends were happy with themselves and one another again. That group of students moved on. Several years later, after I returned from vacation, my parents met me at the airport. As we were driving home, Mother asked me the usual questions about the trip, the weather, my experiences in general. There was a lull in the conversation. Mother gave Dad a sideways glance and simply says, "Dad?" My father cleared his throat as he usually did before something important. "The Eklunds called last night," he began. "Really?" I said. "I haven't heard from them in years. I wonder how Mark is." Dad responded quietly. "Mark was killed in Vietnam," he said. "The funeral is tomorrow, all parents would like it if you could attend." To this day I can still point to the exact spot on I-494 where Dad told me about Mark. I had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. Mark looked so handsome, so mature. All I could think at that moment was, "Mark, I would give all the masking tape in the world if only you would talk to me." The church was packed with Mark's friends. Chuck's sister sang "The Battle Hymn of the republic." Why did it have to rain on the day of the funeral? It was difficult enough at the graveside. The pastor said the usual prayers, and the bugler played taps. One by one those who loved Mark took a last walk by the coffin and sprinkled it with holy water. I was the last one to bless the coffin. As I stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to me. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. I nodded as I continued to stare at the coffin. "Mark talked about you a lot," he said. After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates headed to Chuck's farmhouse for lunch. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting for me. "We want to show you something," his father said, takinga wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it." Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. "Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it." Mark's classmates started to gather around us. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home." Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album." "I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary." Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. I carry this with me at all times," Vicki said without batting an eyelash. "I think we all saved our lists." That's when I finally sat down and cried. I cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again. The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important.

  67. Speeding

Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often?

When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror. The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand.

Bob? Bob from Church? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow.

Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform.

"Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this."

    "Hello, Jack." No smile.

"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids."

"Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good.

"I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit - just this once."

Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?"

"I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct." Ouch. This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics.

    "What'd you clock me at?"

"Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?"

"Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

    "Please, Jack, in the car"

Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window.

The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad.

Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?

Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand. Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.

"Thanks." Jack could not quite keep the sneer out of his voice.

Bob returned to his police car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost?

Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke?

Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:

    "Dear Jack,

Once upon a time, I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it - a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters, all three of them. I had only one, and I'm going to have to wait until Heaven before I can ever hug her again.

A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful, Jack, my son is all I have left.

    -Bob"

Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived.

  68. Designer Strawberries

Genetically-modified strawberries are paving the way to more vitamin-rich fruit...

The scientists are specifically looking at strawberries, although the method can be applied to a variety of crops. Like all fruits, strawberries provide compounds that are essential to life. They are a major source of phytochemicals, antioxidants that are thought to reduce the risk of cancer, and they also happen to be an especially important source of vitamin C.

But although strawberries already have a high nutritional content, scientists claim that these fleshy, red fruits could be engineered to be even better for our health. Until now, it has been possible to engineer foods like corn and soybeans, but scientists haven't been able to manipulate the genome of the commercial strawberry in the way that they would like. The first step involves identifying the different genes in the strawberry and understanding their function and this requires a process called transformation to occur in the fruit. Transformation involves introducing foreign DNA from one type of cell into cells of a different organism with a different genome and to do this, scientists must engineer small, independent DNA molecules called plasmids to carry genetic information to the new host genome. The process is successful when genes from the foreign DNA are incorporated into the genome of the host, in this case the strawberry, causing a permanent change in its properties. So far, attempts at transformation in different varieties of strawberries have proved to be unsuccessful.

  69. Take a Shower Before Bed

According to a recent survey conducted by CloveTWO.com and Kosmo! newspaper, only 44% shower right before going to bed. That means more than half of Malaysians hit the showers before they turn in for the day.

Taking shower before go to bed is essential to our hygiene. Well, simply because everyone, whatever their age, are constantly exposed to bacteria; at school, in the garden, at the office.

Then of course there's the little forgotten fact that the bed itself makes for the perfect breeding ground for all sorts of microorganisms. Dead skin cells, perspiration, the body's natural oils etc all contribute to making your bed the ideal harborage for bacteria, dust mites, and bed bugs. All these could lead to a wide range of health problems.

Sometimes when I am too lethargic, I didn't shower too before sleep.

  70. How to have a critical thinking

It's important to get a handle on mood swings or energy shifts if you want to maintain your work life balance and be successful in study. According to psychologist and researcher Martin Seligman, some folks appear to be hardwired to respond optimistically and hopefully to work life balance upset and life's ups and downs. Others are wired for opposite responses. Fortunately, you do not have to settle for the wiring you were born with. With practice you can improve your resilience and your hopefulness by acquiring solid positive thinking skills.
There’s some advice that I get from that article and I would like to share with others. The first hurdle to get over is the belief that you already need to be different in order to succeed. You don't. You are the way you are and you can start from here, overwhelmed, worried, anxious, whatever. Don't fall into your story about how you feel, but take a stand for what you intend to accomplish to restore your work life balance and where you plan to go. You do not need to feel better before you try these practices -- do them now. Another caveat: Do not interpret your progress in the short term -- measuring increase in strength and endurance after a single workout would be silly.

  71. Tale of the Three Questions

A certain Sultan owned everything a man could wish for, and still he did not know the purpose of life. The answer to three questions made his life difficult: 1. What should I do? 2. With whom should I do the things God asks me to do? 3. When should I do it?

The Sultan asked the advice of all kinds of wise people, but without a satisfactory answer. Then he was told that there was a Chishti dervish who lived far away, and who might give him an answer. The Sultan immediately left to find him, and after a journey of several weeks he came upon the dervish, who was cultivating his own land.

He was a simple man, but no simpleton, as he was reciting a Persian quatrain over and over again : Kaarist waraai ‘elm raw aanraa baash Dar bande gohar mabaash raw kaan raa baash Del hast maqaame gaah begozaar o biaa Jaan manzele aakherast raw jaan raa baash. There is a work beyond knowledge, realise that, go! Do not work to get jewels, be the mine, go! The heart is a temporary abode, leave it and come! The soul is the final abode, realise that, go!

The Sultan was not interested in Persian poems, however, and asked his three questions of the dervish. The dervish did not answer him, but continued with his work. The Sultan became angry and said: “Don’t you know who I am? I am the Sultan of Sultans!” But this did not make any impression on the dervish, who continued doing what he was doing.

Suddenly, a wounded man appeared from the forest, looking as if he were attacked by a wild animal. He dropped to the ground in front of the dervish. The dervish said to the Sultan: “Help me to carry this man to my place!” “I’ll help you,” the Sultan said, “but will you answer my questions afterwards?” “Later!” the dervish said, and so together they brought the wounded man to the hut of the dervish and took care of him. “And now I’d like to receive the answers to my questions,” the Sultan said. “You can return to your palace,” the dervish said, “because you have already received the answers to your questions. As to what to do, you should do what comes to you on your path. As to with whom you should do it, the answer is with those who are present. And as for the when to do it, you should do it the moment it takes place.”

  72. DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTICS

Plastics are manufactured from petroleum. This brings a host of issues (destruction of habitat, extraction of crude oil, security issues from the volatile countries where oil is produced, processing of petroleum, chemical manipulation into various types of plastics). The manufacture involves many chemicals, many of which have not been sufficiently tested for their toxicological impact on humans or animals.

The final plastic product is often a chemical entity that in and of itself has had insufficient toxicological and ecotoxicological testing. An example would be PVC, forms of which are banned in Europe but exist widely in children's toys in America. Recent controversies over plastic bottles (many toxicologists recommending not re-using plastic water bottles and not storing food in tupperware) have highlighted the potential risks. Exacerbating the problem is that science is only now advancing to where it can detect plastic components in human blood and then trace concentrations and link them to human ailments and diseases.

The plastics industry itself often spins plastic and related plastic chemicals into a variety of products, some of which are hazardous and controversial (Teflon, PVC, Polyethylene, polystyrene, various silicones in body and hair care). Plastic-producing companies are often chemical companies or subsidiaries of chemical companies, both with poor track records when it comes to their adherence to regulatory compliance and their willingness to perform toxicological analysis on the products they make.

Plastics often leech component chemicals, including hazardous chemicals, through common temperature changes. It is for this reason that toxicologists do not recommend storing very cold foods in plastics or heating foods (microwaving especially) in plastics.

Plastics are durable materials. Thus, they are hard to eliminate once used and create tremendous waste. While some common plastics can be recycled (#1 and #2 plastics used in common soda and milk bottles), the vast majority cannot. They take up a lot of space in landfills and create air pollution when incinerated.

So we should always think where to throw the plastic we used every day. It is not that simple to left plastic anywhere we want...!

  73. The Importance of Water

"Water can be without the company of humans but
we as humans can only be without water for a few days."

This quotation shows the whole truth about the importance and meaning of water as the main source of nourishment. Its value cannot be overestimated. It is essential for all life on this planet.

The human body consists of about 75% water and the brain about 85%. Each cell in the body depends upon water in order to function. Numerous disorders are caused by insufficient and unhealthy water. In order to maintain the various bodily functions, we need to drink up to 2-3 litres of water each day. We need our daily supply of water since we cannot maintain reserves of it in our body as we can with food. We would die within three to seven days without water.

For thousands of years, humanity has been aware of the importance of water. In Rome, a couple of thousand years ago, it was considered to be one of the biggest crimes to pollute the water.
Today in our advanced and modern society we believe we have to sacrifice everything including the water of this planet we inhabit (for the time being) in order to continue the "progress" and our so-called "welfare." We are rapidly destroying water's life-giving capacities. Increased population, industrial wastes and agricultural chemicals are contaminating our water sources. The citizens of our "consumer/waste" society have unfortunately lost all respect and deference for water and Mother Nature.

In our civilization, we as individuals use water as if we had limitless amounts of it. In Canada, it might seem to be true for the time being, but in Europe and other densely populated areas of our planet, drinking water has become a scarcity for which we pay dearly. Only 2-3% of the planet's water is fresh water. The majority of this tiny fraction exists as ice at the planet's poles or is inaccessible for other reasons. Only 0.2% of the planet's water is potable.

In this situation, we have to appreciate every single drop of water we use every day...Not everyone has the same chance to have so much water in their life...

  74. Are You Drinking Enough Water?

Not only do you have to look at the quality of the water you drink, but whether you are drinking enough water? 75% of all people are chronically dehydrated. In 37% of us, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Here are some other facts:

-Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
-One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters in a university study.
-Lack of water is the number one trigger of daytime fatigue.
-Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
-Even a small drop of 2% in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen.

Drinking five glasses of water daily decreases the risk of:
    -colon cancer by 45%
    -breast cancer by 79%
    -bladder cancer by 50%

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day? If not, use revitalized water to make it an enjoyable experience!

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.
Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. It is a color found in many national flags.
Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red', etc). Red is widely used to indicate danger (high voltage signs, traffic lights). This color is also commonly associated with energy, so you can use it when promoting energy drinks, games, cars, items related to sports and high physical activity.
Light red represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love.
Pink signifies romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness.
Dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath.
Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities.
Reddish-brown is associated with harvest and fall.

    Orange
Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.
To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Orange is very effective for promoting food products and toys.
Dark orange can mean deceit and distrust.
Red-orange corresponds to desire, sexual passion, pleasure, domination, aggression, and thirst for action.
Gold evokes the feeling of prestige. The meaning of gold is illumination, wisdom, and wealth. Gold often symbolizes high quality.

    Yellow
Yellow is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.
Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is often associated with food. Bright, pure yellow is an attention getter, which is the reason taxicabs are painted this color. When overused, yellow may have a disturbing effect; it is known that babies cry more in yellow rooms. Yellow is seen before other colors when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning. In heraldry, yellow indicates honor and loyalty. Later the meaning of yellow was connected with cowardice.
Use yellow to evoke pleasant, cheerful feelings. You can choose yellow to promote children's products and items related to leisure. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. Men usually perceive yellow as a very lighthearted, 'childish' color, so it is not recommended to use yellow when selling prestigious, expensive products to men – nobody will buy a yellow business suit or a yellow Mercedes. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. Light yellow tends to disappear into white, so it usually needs a dark color to highlight it. Shades of yellow are visually unappealing because they loose cheerfulness and become dingy.
Dull (dingy) yellow represents caution, decay, sickness, and jealousy.
Light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy.

    Green
Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money.
Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Sometimes green denotes lack of experience; for example, a 'greenhorn' is a novice. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope. Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the color of free passage in road traffic.
Use green to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products. Green is directly related to nature, so you can use it to promote 'green' products. Dull, darker green is commonly associated with money, the financial world, banking, and Wall Street.
Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy.
Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy.
Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.
Olive green is the traditional color of peace.

    Blue
Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity.
You can use blue to promote products and services related to cleanliness (water purification filters, cleaning liquids, vodka), air and sky (airlines, airports, air conditioners), water and sea (sea voyages, mineral water). As opposed to emotionally warm colors like red, orange, and yellow; blue is linked to consciousness and intellect. Use blue to suggest precision when promoting high-tech products.
Blue is a masculine color; according to studies, it is highly accepted among males. Dark blue is associated with depth, expertise, and stability; it is a preferred color for corporate America.
Avoid using blue when promoting food and cooking, because blue suppresses appetite. When used together with warm colors like yellow or red, blue can create high-impact, vibrant designs; for example, blue-yellow-red is a perfect color scheme for a superhero.
Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness.
Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness.

    Purple
Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.
According to surveys, almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colors. Purple is a very rare color in nature; some people consider it to be artificial.
Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products.
Light purple evokes romantic and nostalgic feelings.
Dark purple evokes gloom and sad feelings. It can cause frustration.

    White
White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection.
White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation. White can represent a successful beginning. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.
In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the color of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. White is an appropriate color for charitable organizations; angels are usually imagined wearing white clothes. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and sterility, so you can use white to suggest safety when promoting medical products. White is often associated with low weight, low-fat food, and dairy products.

    Black
Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery.
Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor, 'black death'). Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color (black tie, black Mercedes). In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief.
Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner. When designing for a gallery of art or photography, you can use a black or gray background to make the other colors stand out. Black contrasts well with bright colors. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme.

    SO GOOD LUCK...!

  76. HISTORY OF BATIK

Evidence of early examples of batik have been found in the Far East, Middle East, Central Asia and India from over 2000 years ago. It is conceivable that these areas developed independently, without the influence from trade or cultural exchanges. However, it is more likely that the craft spread from Asia to the islands of the Malay Archipelago and west to the Middle East through the caravan route. Batik was practised in China as early as the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618). These were silk batiks and these have also been discovered in Nara, Japan in the form of screens and ascribed to the Nara period (AD 710-794). It is probable that these were made by Chinese artists. They are decorated with trees, animals, flute players, hunting scenes and stylised mountains.

No evidence of very old cotton batiks have been found in India but frescoes in the Ajunta caves depict head wraps and garments which could well have been batiks. In Java and Bali temple ruins contain figures whose garments are patterned in a manner suggestive of batik. By 1677 there is evidence of a considerable export trade, mostly on silk from China to Java, Sumatra, Persia and Hindustan. In Egypt linen and occasionally woollen fabrics have been excavated bearing white patterns on a blue ground and are the oldest known and date from the 5th century A.D. They were made in Egypt, possibly Syria. In central Africa resist dyeing using cassava and rice paste has existed for centuries in the Yoruba tribe of Southern Nigeria and Senegal.

Indonesia, most particularly the island of Java, is the area where batik has reached the greatest peak of accomplishment. The Dutch brought Indonesian craftsmen to teach the craft to Dutch warders in several factories in Holland from 1835. The Swiss produced imitation batik in the early 1940s. A wax block form of printing was developed in Java using a cap.
By the early 1900s the Germans had developed mass production of batiks. There are many examples of this form of batik as well as hand-produced work in many parts of the world today. Computerisation of batik techniques is a very recent development.

  77. EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION

    KNOW YOUR SUBJECT MATTER
While this first point may seem obvious, it is very important that you research every nuance of your subject. Read reports and look up information about the subject with the specific purpose of writing a presentation script. When examined in this light, new ideas and alternative ways of thinking often develop. The ability to present a subject with confidence directly affects your audience's impressions and will help keep their attention.

    KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
If you were traveling about speaking on behalf of a new construction project you would tailor vastly different presentations to an audience of engineers and a city council. You'd should also have a couple of other versions for local community activist groups. (depending on whether they're for or against the project)

    KNOW YOURSELF (and your limits)
We all must push our limits and willingly bite off more than we may be comfortable swallowing on occasion -- this is how we learn and grow. Knowing a few of your limits, however, might avert disaster, or at least embarassment.

    DEVELOP A THEME
All presentations, regardless of their complexity, are designed with a single purpose. Whether that purpose is to sell, educate, or for pure entertainment, state that purpose to yourself at the beginning of the development process. Keep this purpose in mind always.

    PREPARE YOUR SCRIPT
The script does not necessarily have to be a work of literary excellence. For some, simple notes on 3 x 5 file cards are sufficient. Other presenters and presentations require a carefully composed, professionally developed script. The exact form of the script depends on the formality of the presentation, the make up of the audience and who will be presenting it.Any presentation script, regardless of complexity is like any other business correspondence. It should consist of the same four basic parts, an opening, body, summary and closing.

  78. Blue-Butterfly Day

It is blue-butterfly day here in spring,
And with these sky-flakes down in flurry on flurry
There is more unmixed color on the wing
Than flowers will show for days unless they hurry.

But these are flowers that fly and all but sing:
And now from having ridden out desire
They lie closed over in the wind and cling
Where wheels have freshly sliced the April mire.

  80. HIGH-HEELED SHOES- BAD FOR THE BODY

Wearing high heels can be fashionable and may make you feel taller, but at what price? High heels can cause foot problems while exacerbating foot problems that you already have. Leg and back pain also are common complaints from those who wear high heels.

    Posture
A high heel shoe puts your foot in a plantarflexed (foot pointed downward) position, placing an increased amount of pressure on your forefoot. This causes you to adjust the rest of your body to maintain your balance. The lower part of your body leans forward and to compensate for that, the upper part of your body must lean back to keep you balanced. This is not your body's normal standing position.

    Gait
When walking, your foot is in a more fixed downward position (plantarflexed) therefore you are not able to push off the ground with as much force. This causes your hip flexor muscles in your legs to work harder to move and pull your body forward. Your knees also stay more bent (flexed) and forward, causing your knee muscles to work harder.

    Balance
Walking in high heel shoes is like walking on a balance beam. It takes a lot of balance and just like teetering on a beam, there is not any support in a high heel shoe to catch you if you fall. High heel shoes cause your foot and ankle to move in a supinated (turned outward) position. This position puts you at risk for losing your balance and spraining your ankles.

    Back
The normal s-curve shape of the back acts as a shock absorber, reducing reduce stress on the vertebrae. Wearing high heels causes lumbar (low-back) spine flattening and a posterior (backward) displacement of the head and thoracic (mid-back) spine. High heel shoes cause you to lean forward and the body's response to that is to decrease the forward curve of your lower back to help keep you in line. Poor alignment may lead to muscle overuse and back pain.

    Hips
The hip flexor muscles are located on the upper front part of your thighs. They are forced to work much harder and longer to help you walk because your feet are held in a downward position (plantarflexed) and have reduced power to move your body forward. If your hip flexor muscles are chronically overused, the muscles can shorten and a contracture can occur. If a contracture occurs, this could lead to flattening of the lumbar (low-back) spine.

    Knees
Knee osteoarthritis is twice as common in women. Some of that blame may be due to high heels. The knee stays flexed (bent) and the tibia (shin bone) turns inward (varus) when wearing high heels. This position puts a compressive force on the inside of the knee (medial), a common site of osteoarthritis. If you already have osteoarthritis, it is best to avoid wearing high heel shoes. High heels increase the distance from the floor to the knee and can result in increased knee torque which can also lead to osteoarthritis.

    Ankles
High heels limit the motion and power of the ankle joint. The calf muscles (gastrocnemius & soleus) are shortened because of the heel height. The shortened muscles cause them to lose power when trying to push the foot off of the ground. The position of the ankle may also cause a shortening (contraction) of the achilles tendon. This can increase the pull of the achilles tendon where it attaches on the back of your heel bone (calcaneus) and may cause a condition called insertional achilles tendonitis.

    Feet
With the foot in a downward position, there is significant increase in the pressure on the bottom (plantar) of the forefoot. The pressure increases as the height of the shoe heel increases. Wearing a 3 1/4 inch heel increases the pressure on the bottom of the forefoot by 76%. The increased pressure may lead to pain or foot deformities such as hammer toes, bunions, bunionettes (tailor's bunions) and neuromas. The downward foot position (plantarflexion) also causes the foot to be more supinated (turned to the outside). This change in foot position changes the line of pull of the achilles tendon and may cause a condition called Haglund's deformity (pump bump).

    Skin and Toes
The narrow, pointed toe box that is often found in high heel shoes also causes damage such as corns, callouses and blisters. If you look at a baby or toddler's foot you will see that their toes are spread apart. If you look at an adult's foot, their toes are usually squished together. A lot of times this is due to the footwear that has been worn. If you trace the footbed (part of the shoe where you put your foot) of a high heel shoe on a sheet of paper, and then stand barefoot on that tracing, you will probably have quite a bit of overlap. Does it still seem like a good idea to put your foot inside that shoe?

    Save Your Feet
If your car tires are out of alignment, you can only drive so many miles before you are at risk of blowing a tire. The same is true for your body. Things need to be in alignment. It is recommended that you only wear high heels for special occasions and even then only a heel height of 1 1/2 inches. Your feet and body will thank you - and you'll save money on trips to the podiatrist's office.

  81. HOW FRIENDSHIP BREAK ?

Both friends will think the other is busy
And will not contact thinking it may be disturbing
    As time passes
Both will think let the other contact
After that each will think why I should contact first ?
Here your love will be converted to hate
Finally without contact the memory becomes weak
    They forget each other.
So keep in touch with all.

I fare well in remembering the names of my friends, but not in preserving friendships. This is because of the lack of contacts and interactions after parting, for instance, after graduation. As time passes, the relationship dwindles and friendship is eventually broken down. So why not once in a while ask your friends out, give them a call or chat to them through instant messengers, and most of all, keep in touch.

  82. BLEPHAROSPASM

Blepharospasm describes any abnormally forceful or frequent blinking.
It can be a normal reaction to very bright lights, to eye drops that burn, to a foreign body irritating the eye, or to dry eyes. The diagnosis of BEB may be missed or delayed for years while doctors look for causes of excessive blinking. Often blepharospasm begins with excessive reflex blinking and is worsened by bright lights, fatigue, or emotional tension. Early blepharospasm may be attributed to dry eyes. The patient with blepharospasm may also have dry eyes and may obtain some relief with tear drops. She may be sensitive to lights and benefit from specially tinted FL41 lenses.

BEB occurs in middle age and affects more women than men. BEB may reflect malfunctioning of a part of the brain called the basal ganglia, involved in coordinating movements. In most patients blepharospasm develops with no known precipitating factors. As the condition progresses, spasms occur more frequently during the day, and interfere with the patient keeping her eyes open to do ordinary tasks such as driving, reading, shopping, and walking. The eyelids may remain forcefully closed for seconds, minutes or even hours. The spasms do not occur in sleep, and some people find that after a good night's sleep, the spasms do not recur for several hours. Many patients develop sensory tricks such as gum chewing, whistling, humming, or singing that enable them to keep their eyes open in order to drive or read.

  83. The Story of St. Valentine

In 270 A.D., marriage had been outlawed by the emperor of Rome, Claudius II. Claudius issued this decree because he thought that married men made bad soldiers since they were reluctant to be torn away from their families in the case of war. Claudius had also outlawed Christianity in this time period because he wished to be praised as the one supreme god, the Emperor of Rome. Valentine was the bishop of Interamna during this period of oppression. Valentine thought that the decrees of Rome were wrong. He believed that people should be free to love God and to marry. Valentine invited the young couples of the area to come to him. When they came, Valentine secretly performed services of matrimony and united the couples.

Valentine was eventually caught and was brought before the emperor. The emperor saw that Valentine had conviction and drive that was unsurpassed among his men. Claudius tried and tried to persuade Valentine to leave Christianity, serve the Roman empire and the Roman gods. In exchange, Claudius would pardon him and make him one of his allies. St. Valentine held to his faith and did not renounce Christ. Because of this, the emperor sentenced him to a three-part execution. First, Valentine would be beaten, then stoned, and then finally, decapitated. Valentine died on February 14th, 270 A.D.

While in prison, waiting for his sentence to be carried out, Valentine fell in love with the jailer's daughter, the blind Asterius. During the course of Valentine's prison stay, a miracle occurred and Asterius regained her sight. Valentine sent her a final farewell note. He signed his last note, "From Your Valentine." Even today, this message remains as the motto for our Valentine's Day celebrations.

  84. THE 4 WIVES

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.
He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He's very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.
He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant's confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.
Now, the merchant's 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, "Now I have 4 wives with me. But when I die, I'll be alone. How lonely I'll be!"
Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.
The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is so good over here! I'm going to remarry when you die!" The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.
He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help and you've always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.
Then a voice called out : "I'll leave with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go." The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, "I should have taken much better care of you while I could have !"
Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives
    a. The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die.
    b. Our 3rd wife ? Our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.
    c. The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we're alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.
    d. The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.
Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it's a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament

  85. A Box Full of Kisses

The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy."

The man was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found out the box was empty. He yelled at her, stating, "Don't you know, when you give someone a present, there is supposed to be something inside? The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and cried, "Oh, Daddy, it's not empty at all. I blew kisses into the box. They're all for you, Daddy."

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness.

Only a short time later, an accident took the life of the child. It is also told that her father kept that gold box by his bed for many years and, whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each one of us, as humans beings, have been given a gold container filled with unconditional love and kisses... from our children, family members, friends, and God. There is simply no other possession, anyone could hold, more precious than this.

  89. 10 WAYS TO GET EFFECTIVE SLEEP

"You can get the sleep you need," says Anne Remmes, M.D., co-director of the Columbia Headache Center and a neurologist at New York City's Columbia-Presbyterian Eastside who specializes in sleep disorders. "You just have to be willing to work at it." Here's how.

    1. Meet your requirements. Count back eight hours from when you have to get up. "You need continuous sleep in long blocks," says James Maas, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and author of Power Sleep: The Revolutionary Program That Prepares Your Mind for Peak Performance (Quill, 1998). Note that individual sleep needs vary from seven hours a night to as many as 9 1/2. If you're still tired at the end of a week, Maas suggests moving your bedtime back by small increments--say, 15 minutes--until you wake up rested. You also should strive to log the same number of hours at the same bed and wake times.

    2. Adjust the atmosphere. Because sleep requires a dip in core body temperature, you may nod off faster in a cool room--but don't make it too cool. For most people, 65-67[degrees] F is ideal, Maas says. To facilitate production of the sleep hormone melatonin, which requires darkness, you also should remove sources of light (including the TV and computer) and get blinds that completely black out your windows.

    3. Steer clear of stimulants. Avoid caffeinated coffees and sodas, sugar-laden snacks and juices and nicotine--particularly later in the day. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep, but Remmes warns that a high-intensity evening workout could keep you up at night. "Figure out how long it takes you to quiet your body and your brain," she says. "Some people can keep going until they jump into bed, but others need several hours to shut everything down."

    4. Don't multitask your mattress. "Condition yourself to associate your bed with the sleep phase in your body's biological rhythm," Maas says. That means reserving your bed for sleep (and sex) only and carrying out the rest of your life elsewhere. For instance, don't watch television, eat, read, talk on the phone or balance your checkbook while you're in bed, he says.

    5. Shrink your siestas. Limit naps to a half-hour or less. According to Maas--who coined the term power nap--short naps will keep you from going into deep sleep and waking up disoriented and will also prevent difficulty falling asleep at your regular bedtime.

    6. Nix the nightcaps and spicy snacks. Alcohol
may help you fall asleep, but after four hours, as it's fully metabolized, you will either wake up or experience fragmented sleep. Don't go to bed hungry, either, since a rumbling stomach will likely wake you up in the middle of the night. But avoid foods that can cause sleep-impeding heartburn and gas, such as garlic and pizza, before going to bed.

    7. Wind down wisely. A hot bath or shower and warm milk or herbal tea can be helpful sleep aids because they relax your muscles and raise your temperature slightly. When your body then cools off, the drop in temperature eases you into sleep. Also, try activities that allow you to unwind, such as meditation and yoga. Other sleep aids, Maas says, include sex, soothing music, slow breathing and visualization exercises.

    8. Don't just lie there. If you haven't fallen asleep in 20 minutes or so, Remmes advises getting out of bed and sitting in a comfortable place with low lighting to read. "Don't look at the clock," she says. "Doing so will make you worried about how late it is, increasing adrenaline and agitation and making it even harder to get to sleep."

    9. Rise and shine. Wake to a soothing alarm (check out Gaiam's Peaceful Awakenings Chime Clock, $98, at gaiam.com) rather than an ear-splitting buzzer. (But note that with enough sleep, you should be able to wake up without an alarm.) Get yourself moving with bright sunlight (or daylight-spectrum artificial light), coffee or tea and light exercise, such as a brisk 30- to 60-minute walk. Avoid intense workouts upon waking, Maas says, because your body temperature is still low, and you're not yet alert, making you vulnerable to injuries. As with any workout, make sure to warm up with at least five (preferably 10) minutes of light cardio.

    10. Seek treatment. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, affecting approximately 30-40 percent of all American adults. Symptoms include difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night or not sleeping long enough (waking early). If you get a full night's sleep and still feel tired in the morning, you might have sleep apnea (a breathing disorder that causes sleep disruption) or restless legs syndrome (leg discomfort that leads to frequent movement while asleep). If these problems persist, you should consult a doctor.
